Masai Mara Hot Air Balloon Safari

The balloon typically flies between treetop level (15 metres) and 300 metres above the Mara plains. The pilot controls altitude by heating the air in the envelope — descending to skim above herds of wildebeest and zebra, then climbing for panoramic views of the Mara River, Oloololo Escarpment, and the endless grasslands stretching to the Serengeti. The variation in altitude is part of the magic — one moment you are eye-level with a giraffe browsing an acacia canopy, the next you are surveying thousands of animals from above.

Hot-air ballooning in the Masai Mara has an excellent safety record. All operators hold Kenya Civil Aviation Authority licences. Pilots are commercially certified with thousands of flight hours — many have flown the Mara for over a decade. Balloons are inspected daily and maintained to international standards. Flights operate only in suitable weather — if wind speeds exceed safe limits, the flight is rescheduled or refunded. The basket is divided into compartments with padded handrails. You will receive a full safety briefing before inflation.

The Mara from above reveals patterns invisible from a vehicle. Hippo pools appear as silver mirrors in the morning light. Elephant herds move in V-formation through the grasslands. Lion prides are spotted resting in clearings. During the Great Migration (July–October), you may float over hundreds of thousands of wildebeest and zebra — an ocean of animals stretching to the horizon. The sunrise transforms the landscape through gold, amber, and rose. The silence is extraordinary — with no engine noise, you hear the dawn bird chorus and the distant rumble of hooves.

Dress in layers — the Mara is cool before dawn (10–15°C at altitude) but warms quickly once the sun rises. Long trousers and closed-toe shoes are required for the landing (which involves a short walk through bush). A warm fleece or jacket for the early morning, sunglasses, and a hat for the champagne breakfast afterwards. Camera straps secured around your neck — the basket can bump during landing and loose items may fall. Leave heavy bags at camp; bring only your camera and phone.

Most operators require a minimum age of 7 years and a minimum height of 1.1 metres — children must be able to see over the basket rim and brace during landing. Children aged 7–12 must be accompanied by a parent or guardian in the same basket compartment. Balloon safaris are generally best suited for children aged 10+ who can appreciate the experience and follow safety instructions. We can arrange alternative morning activities for younger children while parents fly.

Safety always comes first. If wind speeds exceed safe limits, heavy rain or low cloud is present, or thunderstorms are forecast, the flight is postponed to the next available morning or a full refund is offered. The Mara's dry season (July–October and January–February) has the most reliable flying weather. Even in the green season, most mornings are calm enough for flight. Your pilot makes the final call — typically at 5:00 AM before departure. We recommend booking balloon flights early in your Mara stay so there is time to reschedule if needed.
