5-Day Masai Mara & Amboseli Safari | Big Five Adventure

6:00 AM. Your driver-guide collects you from your Nairobi hotel and heads south on the Nairobi–Namanga highway in your private 4x4 safari vehicle. The city gives way to the wide Athi Plains, where Maasai herdsmen in bright shukas walk their cattle across the golden grassland. Stop for breakfast en route at a roadside café, then continue south as the plains grow drier and the acacia trees more scattered. Enormous elephant herds, some of Africa's largest tuskers, parade across the dusty plains with Kilimanjaro as their backdrop. Watch for zebra, giraffe, and cape buffalo as the mountain turns rose-gold in the fading afternoon light.

6:00 AM. Rise early for Amboseli's finest moment — the clearest Kilimanjaro views come at first light, before clouds gather around the summit by mid-morning. Head out for a dawn game drive across the dried lake bed, where dust devils spiral and elephant family groups move in slow procession, matriarchs leading calves barely knee-high. Push on toward Observation Hill and climb to the top for a sweeping panorama of the entire Amboseli basin — swamps glinting green against the pale plains, elephant herds tracing dark lines below, and Kilimanjaro standing in full majesty to the south. Return to your lodge for a leisurely lunch during the midday heat. The afternoon drive explores the Enkongo Narok and Longinye swamps, where hippos wallow in the reeds and crowned cranes stalk the shallows. After a final glimpse of Kilimanjaro at breakfast, check out of your lodge and begin the drive north back towards Nairobi on the Namanga highway, the dry Amboseli plains giving way once more to the greener Athi grasslands. Skirt the capital on the southern bypass and continue northwest into the Great Rift Valley, the escarpment dropping away below as farmland and forest replace the savannah. By early afternoon you arrive at Lake Naivasha, a freshwater lake fringed by papyrus beds and yellow-barked fever trees. Settle into your lakeside hotel for a late lunch, then board a boat for a safari on the water — gliding through floating mats of water hyacinth as fish eagles call from the reeds and hippos surface alongside the boat, their ears twitching. The birdlife is extraordinary: pelicans, cormorants, herons, and lily-trotters crowd the shallows. If time allows, take the short crossing to Crescent Island for a walking safari among free-roaming giraffes, zebras, and wildebeest — one of the few places in Kenya you can walk among wildlife without a fence. Beyond Narok, the wheat fields give way to open rangeland where herdsmen in bright shukas walk alongside their cattle. By late morning you enter the Mara through Sekenani Gate, and the golden savannah opens up endlessly before you. Check into your safari lodge for lunch, then set off on an afternoon game drive along the Talek River. Lion prides lounge in the shade of croton bushes, giraffes browse the scattered acacia, and vast herds of zebra and wildebeest dot the plains. The warm afternoon light turns the grassland golden as you return to camp.

6:00 AM. Rise for one final game drive while the Mara is at its most alive — the dawn light draws out predators before the heat of the day. Your guide tracks fresh prints toward the open plains, where cheetahs perch on termite mounds scanning for breakfast and the Mara River's hippos grunt from the mist-covered pools. By 9:00 AM, return to your lodge for breakfast and check out.
