Day-by-Day Itinerary
Nairobi to Masai Mara
5:30 AM. Your driver-guide picks you up from your Nairobi hotel and you set off in your private 4x4 safari vehicle, heading west. The road climbs through the lush Kikuyu highlands before the Great Rift Valley escarpment unfolds — a sweeping panoramic vista across one of the planet's most dramatic geological features. Pause here for photos before descending into the valley. A breakfast stop in Narok, the last major town before Maasai country, lets you refuel. Beyond Narok, tarmac gives way to red murram roads winding through rolling hills dotted with Maasai homesteads. By mid-morning you reach the Sekenani Gate, and the Mara's golden savannah stretches before you. Game viewing begins immediately — giraffe browse scattered acacia, zebra herds ripple across the plains, and warthogs dash through the scrub. Check into your safari lodge for lunch, then head out for an afternoon game drive along the Talek River, where lion prides rest in the shade and elephants move through the woodlands. Your guide finds a prime viewpoint as the sun dips golden over the Mara plains.
Full Day in Masai Mara
6:00 AM. Rise before the sun and head out into the cool morning air — this is prime hunting time and the Mara's big cats are on the move. Your guide navigates the open grasslands south toward the Mara River, scanning for cheetahs poised on termite mounds and leopards slinking through the riverine forest. At the Mara River, hippos grunt and jostle in the shallows while enormous Nile crocodiles bask on sandy banks. During migration season (July–October), this is where thousands of wildebeest make their dramatic river crossings. Mid-morning, enjoy a packed bush lunch as your guide shares stories of the ecosystem. The afternoon drive takes you toward the Oloololo Escarpment, where the terrain rises dramatically and buffalo herds graze in the valleys below. Topi stand sentinel on every ridge and secretary birds strut through the short grass. An optional visit to a Maasai village offers a glimpse into the ancient pastoralist culture — vibrant shukas, beaded jewelry, and traditional singing. Return to your lodge as golden hour bathes the savannah in amber light.
Masai Mara to Nairobi
6:00 AM. One final early morning game drive to capture the Mara at its most magical — soft golden light streaming across the grasslands, dew clinging to spider webs strung between grass stems, and the distant calls of fish eagles echoing from the river. Your guide targets any species you haven't yet encountered — perhaps a black rhino in the thickets or a leopard draped over a sausage tree branch. Scan the kopjes for lions surveying their territory. By 9:00 AM, return to your lodge for a full breakfast, then check out and begin the drive back to Nairobi. The red-earth roads wind through Maasai country where children wave from homestead doorways and herdsmen guide their cattle across the plains. Rejoin the tarmac at Narok, then climb back through the Rift Valley escarpment. Arrive in Nairobi by approximately 4:00 PM, with drop-off at your hotel or Jomo Kenyatta International Airport.
