Nairobi – Amboseli

~265km | Approx. 4hrs Your C.A.T.S driver-guide will swing by your hotel, residence, or the Nairobi airport for an early pick up in a private 4 x 4 Land Cruiser Jeep. Then we’ll turn toward the Nairobi-Mombasa Highway and make tracks for Amboseli Park. Enjoy the morning sun lighting up the passing farms and we might even spot Masai herdsmen tending to their cattle. We’ll soon see towering Mt. Kilimanjaro rising in the distance, our beacon to the park. Amboseli and lunch beckon – we’ll refresh and set out for our first game drive. Under the gaze of the mighty mountain, we’ll track for the park’s famous elephants, along with lion, leopard, buffalo, giraffe, and zebra. As evening approaches look toward the big mountain – the cloud cover near the summit may clear, revealing its snowy peak. Dinner and rest will be at your lodge.

We might drive up to the suitably named Observation Hill, a great lookout point to see view more wildlife and the rich array of birdlife – crake, egret, heron, falcon, pelican, and eagle have all been spotted here in significant numbers. Then it’s time to hit the road and journey out to Lake Naivasha through the Great Rift Valley. We’ll settle in at the lake and enjoy lunch. Even been on a bicycle safari? Nearby Hell’s Gate Park provides an opportunity to pedal past grazing zebra, buffalo, antelope, and giraffe. Your path will take you through the park’s colorful canyons and imposing cliffs. Arriving at the park, viewing its rolling hills, a feeling of expectation will surely arise as your guide talks about the many prides of lions and other bountiful wildlife that make the Mara their home. Day 5 — Full Day at the Masai Mara

Full Day at the Masai Mara

This is the day to do as much game driving as you please. Talk to your guide about what areas of the park you’d like to visit – he’ll have plenty of suggestions. The area is rich with wildlife so you should be spotting the big game and smaller species like hyena and jackal before long. Lunch will be served picnic-style down at the Mara River – the crossing site of the Great Migration. Should you be here from July to October you’ll have a front-row seat to an incredible influx of wildebeest, zebra, gazelle, topi, and others pouring in from the Serengeti. It’s a display of breathtaking power – both of the invading grazers and the predators awaiting their arrival. Here are the forces of nature playing out right before our eyes. To witness this spectacle from above, take advantage of our optional pre-dawn hot air balloon safari. As the park awakens, you’ll rise above the savannah to see the great streams of wildlife trekking out to the horizon. Unforgettable. We also offer an optional visit to the local Maasai people in one of their nearby villages. Meet the original people of this area and learn about their culture and herding lifestyle. As the sun begins to wane, we’ll head back to our Mara accommodation for dinner and some relaxation time.
