Lake Manyara Day Safari | Tanzania Tree-Climbing Lions

Tree-Climbing Lions & Flamingos

A compact Rift Valley gem where lush groundwater forest meets open floodplain and a shimmering soda lake. Lake Manyara is famous for its tree-climbing lions draped along mahogany branches, enormous elephant herds crashing through the undergrowth, and thousands of flamingos painting the lakeshore pink. The ancient groundwater forest — fed by springs seeping through the Rift Valley escarpment — shelters troops of baboons, blue monkeys, and over 400 bird species. Views from the escarpment wall are staggering. Hemingway called it the loveliest lake in Africa. One game drive here and you'll understand why.

Day 1

Lake Manyara – Tree-Climbing Lions, Flamingos & the Rift Valley Escarpment

~260 km round trip | Approx. 2–2.5 hrs each way

5:30 AM — Your driver-guide greets you at your Arusha hotel as dawn paints the sky in shades of apricot and rose. The route heads southwest through a landscape of sunflower fields and Maasai homesteads, the silhouette of Mount Meru receding in the rear-view mirror. After roughly 130 km, the earth drops away without warning: you have reached the Great Rift Valley escarpment, and below — nestled against its dramatic 600-metre wall — Lake Manyara gleams silver in the morning light.

You enter the park through the main gate and are immediately swallowed by a dense groundwater forest — towering mahogany and strangler figs laced with vines, where blue monkeys leap through the canopy and olive baboon troops lounge on the road with the confidence of creatures who own the place. Troops of banded mongoose scurry across the leaf litter, and a giant kingfisher darts along a forest stream. The air is cool, green, and fragrant.

By mid-morning, the forest thins to acacia woodland where Lake Manyara's most famous residents await: tree-climbing lions draped along the branches of an old Acacia tortilis, their tawny limbs hanging heavy in the heat. Your heart races as you pull up beneath them — it is a sight unique to only a handful of parks in all of Africa, and the photographic opportunities are extraordinary, with the blue lake shimmering behind every frame.

Elephant families emerge from the woodland in unhurried procession, matriarchs guiding calves through the scrub, ears flapping against the rising heat. Giraffes stand among the acacias like living sculptures, and dik-diks — Africa's tiniest antelopes — peer from behind termite mounds with enormous dark eyes.

Around noon, you pause in the vibrant village of Mto wa Mbu for a freshly prepared lunch at a local restaurant — grilled tilapia, plantain, and tropical fruit juices — before returning for the afternoon drive along the lakeshore. Here, the landscape transforms into an open alkaline floodplain: thousands of flamingos crowd the shallows, their collective pink haze rippling in the midday thermals. Pelicans, storks, and African spoonbills work the margins — over 400 bird species call this park home, making it one of the richest birding sites in East Africa.

As the 3:30 PM light softens to amber, your driver heads south toward the hot springs, where steam rises from sulphurous pools at the park's edge — a reminder of the volcanic forces that carved the Rift. Hippos wallow in adjacent pools, grunting their displeasure at the attention. You exit the park with the escarpment glowing gold behind you and begin the return drive, arriving in Arusha by approximately 6:30–7:00 PM, your camera full and your senses still humming with the wild abundance of Lake Manyara.
