Shimba Hills Day Trip from Diani | Forest Wildlife Safari

Coastal Rainforest & Sable Antelope

A coastal rainforest hidden just thirty minutes from Diani's white sand beaches — Shimba Hills is one of Kenya's most underrated wildlife escapes. This dense tropical forest shelters the rare sable antelope, found almost nowhere else in East Africa, alongside forest elephants, buffalo, and leopard. Trek through cathedral-like canopy to Sheldrick Falls, a jungle waterfall cascading into a pristine pool. Over 200 butterfly species drift through shafts of green-filtered light while colobus monkeys crash through the treetops above. A completely different world from the savannah — lush, cool, and utterly enchanting.

Day-by-Day Itinerary

Day 1

Shimba Hills National Reserve — Rare Antelope & Coastal Rainforest

~35 km | Approx. 45 min

7:00 AM — Your driver collects you from your Diani Beach hotel for the short drive inland to Shimba Hills National Reserve — barely forty-five minutes through the bustling market town of Kwale, where the flat coastal scrub suddenly gives way to rolling green hills draped in ancient coastal rainforest. The air cools noticeably as you climb, heavy with the scent of wild jasmine and damp earth. Bottled water is on board for the ride.

By 8:00 AM you're inside the reserve gates, and the morning game drive begins on red-earth tracks that wind beneath towering Mvule and Mhugu trees whose canopy filters the sunlight into shafts of emerald and gold. Shimba Hills holds a treasure found almost nowhere else in East Africa — the magnificent sable antelope, with their scimitar-curved horns and glossy black coats offset by striking white facial markings. Spotting a bull sable standing proud in a forest clearing, his horns sweeping back in a dramatic arc, is a sight that stops your breath. Your driver-guide knows their favoured grazing areas and positions the vehicle for the perfect photograph.

The reserve is also home to forest elephants that move like grey ghosts between the trees, buffalo herds grazing the open glades, and — for the patient — the occasional leopard draped across a branch overhead. Over 200 butterfly species flutter through the canopy, some with wingspans as wide as your palm, their iridescent blues and oranges catching shafts of dappled sunlight.

9:30 AM — Drive to Pengo Hill viewpoint, where the forest drops away and the entire Kenyan south coast unfolds before you — the Indian Ocean glittering on the horizon, Diani's white sand a thin bright ribbon, and the green hinterland stretching inland toward the Shimba ridge. The golden backlight creates perfect silhouettes of the hilltop palms.

10:30 AM — Lace up for the guided walk to Sheldrick Falls. The trail descends through primeval rainforest where ancient cycad gardens — living fossils that predate the dinosaurs — line the path. Bird calls echo through the canopy: Fischer's turaco flashes crimson wing feathers, and trumpeter hornbills crash through the branches. After about forty-five minutes of hiking, the sound of falling water grows louder, and you emerge at the falls — a shimmering curtain of water dropping into a cool, fern-fringed plunge pool. The mist on your skin is pure refreshment after the hike.

12:30 PM — Lunch is served at a scenic spot within the reserve — a well-earned spread enjoyed to the soundtrack of birdsong and rustling canopy. Your guide shares stories of the reserve's conservation history and the ongoing protection of the sable antelope population.

2:00 PM — A final afternoon game circuit past more sable antelope, waterbuck, troops of Sykes' monkeys, and the occasional bushbuck darting through the undergrowth. The late-afternoon light paints the forest in warm amber tones, perfect for photography.

You're back at your Diani Beach hotel by approximately 4:30 PM — still in time for a sunset swim, marvelling at how much wildness exists just thirty minutes from the beach.
