Day-by-Day Itinerary

Day 1

Kisite-Mpunguti Marine Park Snorkeling Excursion

~80 km to Shimoni + 30-min dhow sail | Approx. 1.5 hrs drive

6:30 AM — Kenya's finest marine sanctuary lies at the country's southernmost tip, and reaching it is half the adventure. Your driver collects you from your Diani hotel and heads south along the coast road through Msambweni and Majoreni, where fishermen in hand-carved outrigger canoes are already heading out on the morning tide. The landscape shifts from resort gardens to wild cashew woodland and tiny coral-stone villages before you reach the old slave port of Shimoni at around 8:00 AM.

At the jetty, a traditional Swahili dhow with a lateen sail and weathered wooden hull awaits. Your Swahili crew — descendants of generations of Indian Ocean sailors — cast off, and for the next 30 minutes you sail across the Shimoni Channel toward the open sea. Keep your eyes on the water: between December and March, pods of bottlenose and humpback dolphins are almost guaranteed to appear, their dorsal fins slicing through the glassy surface before they leap in silver arcs. Even outside peak season, dolphins frequent these warm Pemba Channel currents year-round.

By 9:00 AM the dhow anchors inside Kisite-Mpunguti Marine National Park — 28 square kilometers of protected coral reef, seagrass beds, and open ocean that form Kenya's most biodiverse marine ecosystem. The water here is a shade of blue so vivid it barely looks real. Slip on your mask and fins and enter a silent, kaleidoscopic world: brain corals and branching staghorns shelter clouds of electric-blue damselfish, lionfish fan their venomous spines in slow motion, and a green sea turtle rises from the seagrass to breathe — hovering at the surface for a moment before descending in a graceful spiral. Moorish idols, emperor angelfish, and giant moray eels all patrol these reefs, and your guide points out octopuses camouflaged against the coral rock.

You'll snorkel two or three different reef sites through the morning, each with its own character — shallow coral gardens where you can almost touch the reef, deeper walls where barracuda and trevally cruise the blue, and sandy channels where eagle rays ripple past like underwater birds. Between sites, the dhow drifts and the crew shares stories of the coast while fresh fruit is passed around.

At noon, the dhow sails to a sheltered cove near Wasini Island for a freshly prepared seafood lunch: grilled fish caught that morning, coconut crab, chapati, and tropical fruit, eaten on deck with your feet dangling over turquoise water and the distant green ridge of Wasini rising behind you.

After lunch, a final snorkel session targets a site known for sea turtles and — in season (September to February) — the elusive whale shark, the gentle giant of the ocean. Even without these headline acts, the sheer abundance of reef life here rivals anywhere on Earth. By 3:00 PM the dhow turns homeward, the sail catching the afternoon breeze, and you're back at Shimoni jetty by 3:30 PM. The drive north returns you to Diani by approximately 5:00 PM, your skin warm with salt and sun, and the colors of the reef still dancing behind your eyelids.
