Day-by-Day Itinerary

Day 1

Arusha to Tarangire

7:00 AM. Your guide picks you up from your Arusha hotel and heads south toward Tarangire National Park — a scenic two-hour drive through the dry Maasai steppe. The road passes small Maasai villages and vast herds of cattle tended by herdsmen in colourful shukas, the distant outline of Mount Meru fading behind you. At the park gate, the world changes: colossal baobab trees — their thick, twisted trunks centuries old — dominate the landscape. Tarangire is elephant country, and the herds here are among the largest in Tanzania. Along the Tarangire River, hundreds of elephants drink and bathe, calves rolling in the red dust while matriarchs rumble softly. Lions rest in the dappled shade of the baobabs, giraffes reach for high branches, and the birdlife is extraordinary — lilac-breasted rollers, yellow-collared lovebirds, and giant ground hornbills all share this ancient landscape. Enjoy a packed lunch in the park and continue your game drive until late afternoon before settling into your safari lodge.

Day 2

Tarangire to Lake Manyara

Rise early for a final morning game drive in Tarangire — the dawn light filtering through the baobabs is magical, and the animals are active before the heat of the day. After breakfast, depart for Lake Manyara National Park — about ninety minutes northwest. The landscape shifts from dry savannah to the dramatic Rift Valley escarpment as you approach. Enter the park through its main gate and immediately you're enclosed by a dense groundwater forest — towering fig trees, sycamores, and wild palms form a thick green canopy alive with monkeys and birdcalls. Emerge from the forest onto the open lakeshore, where the alkaline lake shimmers in the afternoon sun and thousands of flamingos stand in the shallows. Lake Manyara is famous for its tree-climbing lions — watch the large acacia branches carefully. Elephant families move through the woodland, baboon troops line the road, and hippos wallow near the southern springs. Check into your lodge beneath the towering Rift Valley wall.

Day 3

Lake Manyara to Serengeti

After breakfast, drive from Lake Manyara up the Rift Valley escarpment and through the Ngorongoro highlands toward the Serengeti — about four hours in total. The road climbs through farmland and misty highland forest, passing through the Ngorongoro Conservation Area with its stunning crater rim viewpoints. Pause for photos, then begin the descent toward the Serengeti. The terrain changes dramatically — lush green highlands give way to open, short-grass plains dotted with Maasai and their cattle. At the Naabi Hill Gate, the Serengeti opens up before you like a vast golden ocean. Your afternoon game drive is an introduction to the scale of this incredible ecosystem: herds of wildebeest and zebra stretch across the plains as far as you can see, giraffes stand silhouetted against the enormous sky, and your guide tracks the telltale signs of predators — circling vultures, nervous gazelle herds, fresh paw prints in the dust. Settle into your Serengeti camp.

Day 4

Full Day Serengeti

6:00 AM. A full day to explore the Serengeti in depth. The dawn drive heads to the Seronera River valley — the predator heartland, where permanent water draws lions, leopards, and cheetahs into a concentrated area. Lions sprawl on rocks along the riverbanks, leopards drape themselves in the heavy branches of sausage trees, and cheetahs perch on termite mounds scanning the open grasslands. The kopjes — ancient granite outcrops scattered across the plains — are favourite lookout points for lions and home to agama lizards and hyraxes. Enjoy a bush lunch under a shade tree, then explore a different sector in the afternoon. The Serengeti's sheer size (over 14,000 square kilometres) means every drive reveals something new: a hunting pack of hyenas, a secretary bird strutting through the grass, or a massive herd of buffalo darkening the horizon. Return to camp as the sky streaks with sunset colours.

Day 5

Serengeti — Second Full Day

6:00 AM. Your second full day in the Serengeti offers the chance to go further afield. Today your guide may take you toward the Western Corridor, where the Grumeti River attracts enormous Nile crocodiles and provides a different riverine habitat, or to the less-visited northern reaches where the bush thickens and the terrain rolls. During the Great Migration season, millions of wildebeest and zebra move through the Serengeti in vast columns — a sight that defies comprehension. Even outside migration, the Serengeti's resident wildlife is staggering: Thomson's and Grant's gazelles, topi, eland, hartebeest, waterbuck, and over 500 bird species. The afternoon drive takes you through golden grasslands as the light softens — ideal for photography. Watch for serval cats in the long grass and bat-eared foxes near their burrows. Return to camp for a final night in the Serengeti, the sounds of the bush lulling you to sleep.

Day 6

Serengeti to Ngorongoro Crater

Enjoy one last early morning game drive in the Serengeti before heading east. By 9:00 AM, begin the three-hour drive to the Ngorongoro Crater — the grand finale of your safari. The terrain climbs from open plains to the forested highlands around the crater rim. Arrive for lunch at the rim, where the cool mountain air is a dramatic contrast to the Serengeti's dry heat. After lunch, descend the winding road 600 metres into the caldera. The crater floor is a wildlife spectacle like no other: lion prides patrol the grasslands, massive elephants wander near the Lerai Forest, and herds of buffalo and wildebeest carpet the open plain. Search for the crater's critically endangered black rhinos in the scrubland, and watch flamingos line the shores of the alkaline Lake Magadi. Hippos crowd the murky pools, grunting and yawning as you drive past. Ascend at dusk and settle into your lodge on the misty rim.

Day 7

Ngorongoro to Arusha — Farewell

6:00 AM. Descend into the Ngorongoro Crater for a final dawn game drive — the ultimate farewell to Tanzania's Northern Circuit. The morning mist curls across the crater floor and the light is soft gold against the steep green walls. Lions are still active from the night, spotted hyenas lope toward their dens, and crowned cranes wade through the marshes with unhurried grace. Visit the hippo pool one last time, scan for rhinos in the open, and soak in the extraordinary density of wildlife packed into this volcanic amphitheatre. By mid-morning, ascend the crater rim and take a final sweeping look at one of the world's great natural wonders. Begin the three-hour drive back to Arusha, passing through highland forest and the farming town of Karatu. Arrive in Arusha by early afternoon for your onward journey — seven days of Tanzania's finest behind you.
