7-Day Kilimanjaro Climb | Rongai Route Summit Trek
Kilimanjaro's Quiet Northern Approach from the Kenya Border
Kilimanjaro from a completely different angle — the Rongai Route approaches Africa's highest peak from the quiet, dry northern slopes near the Kenyan border. Expect solitude instead of crowds, gentle gradients through remote forest where wildlife still roams, and views of the Kenyan plains and northern ice fields that few climbers ever see. Camp beside the dramatic Mawenzi peak, summit Uhuru Peak (5,895m) under starlight, then descend via the Marangu Route for a completely different perspective on the mountain. The driest route on Kilimanjaro — an excellent choice during the wet season.
Tour Highlights
Day-by-Day Itinerary
Rongai Gate (1,950m) to Simba Camp (2,625m)
Drive from Moshi around Kilimanjaro's eastern flank to Rongai Gate near the Kenya border. Trek through pine and cypress forest, then native forest where Colobus monkeys swing through the canopy. Camp at Simba Camp ('Lion' in Swahili) with views across the Kenyan border.
Simba Camp (2,625m) to Second Cave (3,450m)
Leave the forest and enter the moorland zone. The northern slopes are drier and more open, with views stretching to the Kenya-Tanzania border. Pass First Cave and continue to Second Cave camp, set in a rocky valley beneath Mawenzi peak.
Second Cave (3,450m) to Kikelelwa Camp (3,630m)
Traverse across the northern slopes with excellent acclimatization. The landscape is a stark, beautiful mix of moorland and rocky terrain. Views of Mawenzi's dramatic spires become more impressive with every step. Camp beneath Mawenzi's towering cliffs.
Kikelelwa Camp (3,630m) to Mawenzi Tarn (4,330m)
Climb to the stunning Mawenzi Tarn — a small alpine lake nestled at the base of Mawenzi's jagged peaks. This is one of Kilimanjaro's most dramatic campsites, surrounded by volcanic rock spires. Optional acclimatization hike toward Mawenzi's ridgeline.
Mawenzi Tarn (4,330m) to Kibo Hut (4,750m)
Cross the lunar saddle between Mawenzi and Kibo — a vast, barren alpine desert at 4,500m. The saddle is otherworldly: no vegetation, just volcanic rock and sky. Arrive at Kibo Hut by lunchtime. Rest and prepare for your midnight summit attempt.
Summit Night — Uhuru Peak (5,895m) to Horombo Hut (3,720m)
Midnight ascent through darkness and scree. Reach Gilman's Point (5,681m) on the crater rim, then push past the ancient glaciers to Uhuru Peak (5,895m). Summit photos, tears of joy, then descend — first to Kibo Hut, then all the way down the Marangu route to Horombo Hut.
Horombo Hut to Marangu Gate — Certificates & Celebration
Descend through moorland and rainforest via the Marangu route. Collect your summit certificate at the gate. Transfer to Moshi or Arusha.
