7-Day Mt. Kilimanjaro Climb — Machame Route
The 'Whiskey Route' — Kilimanjaro's Most Scenic Trek
The Machame Route is Kilimanjaro's most popular path for experienced trekkers — and for good reason. Known as the 'Whiskey Route' for its tougher terrain compared to the 'Coca-Cola' Marangu, this 7-day expedition rewards you with Kilimanjaro's most dramatic scenery. You'll camp under ancient rainforest canopy, traverse the otherworldly Shira Plateau at 3,800m, scramble up the iconic Barranco Wall (the most photographed moment on any Kilimanjaro climb), and walk the Southern Circuit beneath towering glaciers before your midnight summit push. The 'climb high, sleep low' acclimatization profile gives you an excellent chance of reaching Uhuru Peak.
Safari Highlights
Day-by-Day Itinerary
Machame Gate (1,640m) to Machame Camp (3,020m)
Drive from Moshi to Machame Gate on Kilimanjaro's southern slopes. Trek through dense montane rainforest teeming with birdlife, Colobus monkeys, and ancient trees draped in moss. The trail is muddy but magical. Arrive at Machame Camp on the forest's upper edge.
Machame Camp (3,020m) to Shira Camp (3,840m)
Climb steeply out of the forest into the heath and moorland zone. Giant heather and unique groundsel plants create an alien landscape. Cross the Shira Plateau — a vast, high-altitude plateau formed by an ancient volcanic collapse. Camp at Shira with views of Kibo peak looming above.
Shira Camp (3,840m) to Barranco Camp (3,960m)
Trek toward the Lava Tower (4,630m) for critical acclimatization. 'Climb high, sleep low' — you'll gain nearly 800m before descending back to Barranco Camp. The Lava Tower lunch stop offers surreal views of the Western Breach. Descend through the beautiful Barranco Valley with its giant groundsel forest.
Barranco Camp (3,960m) to Karanga Camp (4,035m)
The day begins with the legendary Barranco Wall — a steep, non-technical rock scramble that is the highlight of the entire Machame route. The views from the top are breathtaking. Continue along the Southern Circuit, crossing several valleys before reaching Karanga Camp — your last water point before the summit.
Karanga Camp (4,035m) to Barafu Camp (4,673m)
Short but significant climb to Barafu ('Ice' in Swahili) — your summit base camp. The terrain is barren volcanic rock and scree. Arrive by lunchtime, rest, and prepare for summit night. Your guide will brief you on the midnight departure. Try to sleep by 7 PM — it's going to be a long night.
Summit Night — Uhuru Peak (5,895m) to Mweka Camp (3,100m)
Rise at midnight. Headlamps on, layer up, and begin the steep zigzag ascent through scree and volcanic rock. Reach Stella Point (5,756m) on the crater rim as dawn breaks. Continue along the crater rim past ancient glaciers to Uhuru Peak (5,895m) — you're standing on the Roof of Africa. Descend to Barafu for rest, then continue down to Mweka Camp through alpine desert and moorland.
Mweka Camp (3,100m) to Mweka Gate — Summit Certificates
Final descent through lush rainforest to Mweka Gate. Collect your summit certificate and sign the register. Bid farewell to your mountain crew — the porters, cooks, and guides who made it all possible. Transfer to your hotel in Moshi for a hot shower and celebration.
