Drift by boat across Lake Naivasha past hippos and fish eagles, then walk among giraffes on Crescent Island. The grand finale: two full days in the legendary Masai Mara — lion prides, leopard hunts, cheetah sprints, and the thundering Great Migration river crossings that define East African safari. From coral sand to the Mara's golden savannah, this is Kenya distilled into one magnificent journey.

Day-by-Day Itinerary
Diani Beach to Tsavo East National Park
6:00 AM — Your driver-guide collects you from your Diani Beach hotel. Leave the turquoise Indian Ocean behind in your private 4×4 Land Cruiser, heading north-west through the coastal hinterland. Coconut palms thin to sisal plantations and baobab trees as the landscape dries and reddens.
Enter Tsavo East National Park through Bachuma Gate by mid-morning — Kenya's largest protected wilderness. Game viewing begins immediately. Tsavo's legendary red elephants materialise — enormous herds dust-bathing in iron-rich laterite soil until their hides glow the colour of the earth. Follow the Galana River downstream past massive crocodiles basking on sandbanks and hippos surfacing in deeper pools.
Stop at Lugard Falls — water-sculpted rock formations where the river forces through narrow channels carved over millennia. Continue to Aruba Dam where buffalo, waterbuck, and zebra jostle at the waterline. The afternoon game drive tracks lion prides through golden grass and watches for cheetah on termite mounds. As the sun drops, the red earth turns molten gold.
Tsavo East to Amboseli National Park
5:30 AM — Dawn game drive through Tsavo East. Secretary birds stalk the grass, red elephants move toward waterholes, and spotted hyenas slink toward their dens. Visit Mudanda Rock for sweeping panoramic views.
After breakfast, depart south-west for Amboseli National Park. The landscape transforms as vast red plains give way to open grasslands. A magnificent snow-capped silhouette materialises on the southern horizon — Mount Kilimanjaro, Africa's highest peak at 5,895 metres, growing more commanding with every kilometre.
Arrive at Amboseli by early afternoon. After lunch, head out for your afternoon game drive. Enormous elephant herds parade across dried lake beds with Kilimanjaro filling the sky. Navigate papyrus-fringed swamps where hippos surface lazily and crowned cranes pick through the shallows. Watch for lion prides beneath yellow-barked acacias. As the golden light deepens, elephants silhouetted against Kilimanjaro's evening profile create Africa's most iconic scene — the sky ablaze with amber and violet.
Amboseli to Lake Naivasha
5:30 AM — Rise before dawn for the clearest Kilimanjaro views — the mountain's glacial crown glows rose-pink then gold in the first light. A morning game drive through Amboseli's finest circuits. Climb Observation Hill for a final sweeping 360-degree panorama — elephants, swamps, and Kilimanjaro in one breathtaking view.
After breakfast, depart north for Lake Naivasha. The highway climbs through the Athi Plains, bypasses Nairobi, then descends into the Great Rift Valley — the escarpment viewpoint offers breathtaking panoramas. Continue to Lake Naivasha, a freshwater lake fringed with papyrus at 1,884 metres altitude.
Arrive mid-afternoon and check into your lakeside lodge. Board a boat for an afternoon boat safari on Lake Naivasha. Glide past pods of hippos surfacing just metres away. African fish eagles — their haunting cry echoing across the water — swoop to snatch fish in a flash of white and chestnut. Cormorants, kingfishers, herons, and lily-trotters crowd the shallows. The late afternoon light paints the water gold.
Crescent Island Walking Safari & Transfer to Masai Mara
7:00 AM — After breakfast, take a short boat ride to Crescent Island for a rare walking safari experience. Stroll among free-roaming giraffes, zebras, wildebeest, and waterbuck on the lush island grassland — no fences, no vehicles, just you and the wildlife. The 360-degree Rift Valley views are stunning.
Return to the mainland by late morning and depart for the Masai Mara. The route heads west through Narok town — the last major settlement before Maasai country. Beyond Narok, tarmac gives way to red murram roads winding through rolling hills dotted with Maasai homesteads, herds of cattle, and children in crimson shukas waving from the roadside.
By late afternoon you reach the Masai Mara — Kenya's most celebrated wildlife reserve. The golden savannah stretches to the horizon, dotted with flat-topped acacia trees and roaming herds. Game viewing begins immediately on the drive to your lodge — giraffe browse scattered trees, zebra herds ripple across the plains, and topi stand sentinel on termite mounds. Check into your Mara lodge as the sun dips gold over the endless plains.
Full Day in the Masai Mara
Wake to the sounds of the African bush — hornbills calling, hyenas whooping in the distance, and the deep rumble of lions announcing the dawn. Today is dedicated entirely to the Masai Mara, Africa's most celebrated wildlife arena.
6:00 AM — Depart for an early morning game drive when predators are most active. Your guide reads the plains like a book — fresh lion tracks in the dust, vultures circling a distant kill, a cheetah's silhouette on a termite mound scanning for prey. The Mara's open grasslands deliver unparalleled big cat encounters: lion prides with tumbling cubs, leopards draped across sausage tree branches, and cheetah families teaching their young to hunt.
Cross the Talek and Mara rivers, where enormous Nile crocodiles drift like logs and hippo pods surface and snort. During the Great Migration season (July–October), witness one of nature's greatest spectacles — hundreds of thousands of wildebeest and zebra massing at river crossing points, the tension building before the thunderous plunge into crocodile-infested waters.
Return to your lodge for lunch and a rest during the heat of the day. The afternoon game drive explores different sectors of the reserve — enormous elephant herds moving through the grassland, hyena clans at their dens, and the elegant movements of giraffes against the Mara's golden backdrop. As the sun sets, the sky ignites in shades of crimson and gold — a final sundowner moment on the plains.
Second Full Day in the Masai Mara
Another full day in the Mara — because no single day can capture the breadth of this extraordinary reserve.
5:30 AM — An early departure to explore the Mara Triangle, the western sector of the reserve managed by the Trans Mara County. The terrain here is lusher and hillier, with dramatic riverine forests along the Mara River. The big cat density is exceptional — this is prime territory for lion prides controlling river territories and leopards hunting in the thick gallery forest.
Your guide navigates to key vantage points along the Mara River — if the migration is running, this is ground zero for river crossings. Even outside migration season, the river teems with life: massive crocodiles, hippo pods, giant kingfishers, and goliath herons.
Mid-morning, visit a traditional Maasai village for an authentic cultural experience — warriors demonstrate their jumping dance, elders explain traditional medicines, and children sing songs of welcome. Learn about the Maasai's remarkable coexistence with the wildlife that surrounds them.
The afternoon game drive focuses on the open plains — Thomson's and Grant's gazelles in their thousands, eland, topi, and the ever-present predators that follow the herds. Watch for a cheetah sprint, the fastest land animal reaching speeds over 100km/h in explosive bursts. The Mara's final sunset paints the sky in watercolour layers of pink and gold as you return to your lodge.
Masai Mara to Nairobi
6:00 AM — A final early morning game drive through the Mara's golden plains. The bush is alive with morning activity — the dawn chorus of birds, elephants moving to water, and perhaps one last big cat sighting to crown the safari.
8:30 AM — Return to your lodge for breakfast, savouring the views one final time. Pack up and depart for Nairobi. The road winds through rolling Maasai country — green hills dotted with homesteads, cattle, and goats. Stop in Narok for a comfort break and fresh supplies.
The highway climbs through the escarpment and descends toward Nairobi through the fertile highlands. Arrive in Nairobi by early afternoon. Your driver drops you at your hotel, JKIA airport, or any location of your choice. Seven extraordinary days — from the turquoise Indian Ocean and Tsavo's red elephants, beneath Kilimanjaro's glaciers, across hippo-filled lakes, to the lion prides and Great Migration of the Masai Mara. The ultimate Kenya safari odyssey from coast to capital.
