Safari Highlights
Day-by-Day Itinerary
Nairobi to Amboseli
6:00 AM. Depart Nairobi heading south along the Namanga Road, passing through Maasai country where herdsmen in colourful shukas walk alongside their cattle. Over roughly four hours, the landscape shifts from busy city outskirts to open savannah as Mount Kilimanjaro emerges on the southern horizon. Arrive at Amboseli National Park by late morning and check into your safari lodge for lunch. By early afternoon, you're on your first game drive across the park's sweeping plains. Amboseli's elephant herds — over 1,500 strong — are the stars here, moving in family groups against the towering backdrop of Kilimanjaro. Your guide takes you towards the Enkongo Narok swamp where hippos wallow and birdlife fills the air — African fish eagles, sacred ibis, and lilac-breasted rollers flash colour across the wetlands. As the golden hour arrives, watch for lions resting beneath acacia trees.
Full Day Amboseli
Wake before dawn for the clearest Kilimanjaro views — the mountain reveals its full snow-capped summit in the early morning before clouds wrap around it by mid-morning. A 6:30 AM game drive takes you through Amboseli's varied habitats: dried lake beds shimmering in the heat, green papyrus swamps fed by Kilimanjaro's underground springs, and acacia woodland alive with superb starlings and weaverbirds. Climb Observation Hill around mid-morning for a 360-degree panorama of the park — swamps, open plains, elephant herds below, and Kilimanjaro towering to the south. After lunch at your lodge, the afternoon drive explores the southern marshlands where buffalo herds gather and egrets wade through shallow water. Watch for bat-eared foxes peeking from their burrows, and as the light turns amber, elephants silhouetted against the mountain create some of Africa's most iconic photographic moments.
Amboseli to Tsavo East
After an early breakfast, depart Amboseli heading east towards Tsavo East National Park — Kenya's largest park, spanning over 13,000 square kilometres. The drive of roughly three to four hours takes you through the Kimana corridor, where the landscape transitions from Amboseli's open grasslands to Tsavo's wilder, semi-arid bushland. The iron-rich red soil is immediately distinctive — everything here has a rust-coloured tint, including the famous red elephants who dust-bathe until coated in crimson earth. Arrive at your lodge for lunch, then head out for an afternoon game drive along the Galana River. Massive crocodiles bask on sandy banks while hippo pods eye you suspiciously from midstream. Scan the open plains for lion prides, giraffes browsing the commiphora scrub, and herds of buffalo kicking up clouds of red dust as they move across the vast landscape.
Full Day Tsavo East
A full day exploring the wilderness of Tsavo East. Your early morning game drive at 6:30 AM heads towards the dramatic Lugard Falls — not a waterfall but a series of powerful rapids that have carved colourful, sculpted channels through the rock over millennia. The Galana River here is home to some of Kenya's largest crocodiles. Continue to Mudanda Rock, an enormous inselberg that acts as a natural water catchment — during the dry season, hundreds of elephants gather at the pool below, creating one of Tsavo's most spectacular sights. Return to your lodge for lunch and a rest during the midday heat. The afternoon drive explores different sectors of the park, following dried riverbeds where lesser kudu hide in the thicket and gerenuk stand on their hind legs to browse high acacia branches. The vast, open horizons of Tsavo give a sense of Africa at its wildest and most untouched.
Tsavo East to Diani Beach
6:30 AM. A final early morning game drive through Tsavo East's red-earth plains — the low golden light catching dust kicked up by elephant herds heading to water. After breakfast, depart for the Kenyan coast. The drive of roughly three to four hours takes you through Voi and along the Mombasa Highway, where the landscape transforms gradually from dry savannah to tropical coastal lowland. Baobab trees give way to coconut palms, mango orchards, and cashew plantations as you near the Indian Ocean. Cross the Likoni Ferry with views of Mombasa's historic harbour and Fort Jesus on the waterfront, then continue south along the coastal road. By early afternoon, you arrive at Diani Beach — the contrast is breathtaking. White coral sand stretches before you, the turquoise Indian Ocean sparkles in the afternoon sun, and the warm coastal breeze carries the scent of frangipani. Your bush-to-beach transition is complete.
Diani Beach — At Leisure
A full day of tropical Indian Ocean bliss at Diani Beach. Wake to the sound of waves and birdsong in the palm canopy overhead. The morning is yours to spend however you choose — swim in the warm turquoise water, stroll along the endless white sand beach, or relax poolside with a book and a fresh tropical juice. For the more adventurous, Diani offers world-class snorkelling along its coral reef, where colourful parrotfish, angelfish, and sea turtles glide through crystal-clear waters. You can arrange a glass-bottom boat ride, try your hand at kitesurfing or stand-up paddleboarding, or visit the nearby Colobus Conservation Centre to see the endangered Angolan colobus monkeys that live in the coastal forest canopy. As evening falls, enjoy a seafood dinner as the sun sets over the palm-lined shore — a perfect complement to your days in the bush.
Diani — Departure
Your final morning at Diani Beach. Enjoy a leisurely breakfast with ocean views and one last walk along the white sand if time allows. Depending on your onward travel plans, you'll be transferred to Ukunda airstrip for a short flight to Nairobi, or to Moi International Airport in Mombasa for your departure flight. If your schedule is flexible, consider an optional morning trip to the Colobus monkey sanctuary or a final snorkel on the reef before you go. Your safari journey — from the elephant-filled plains beneath Kilimanjaro, through the red-earth wilderness of Tsavo, to the turquoise paradise of the Indian Ocean — has covered some of Kenya's most spectacular landscapes and wildlife in one unforgettable week.
