Day-by-Day Itinerary
Nairobi to Met Station (3,050m)
Early morning pickup from your Nairobi hotel and drive north through the fertile Central Highlands to Naro Moru town. Brief stop for final supplies before continuing to Naro Moru Gate (2,400m) for KWS registration and porter allocation. Begin the trek through dense montane forest — towering camphor and cedar trees draped in old man's beard moss. Watch for black-and-white colobus monkeys swinging through the canopy and listen for the distinctive call of Hartlaub's turaco. The forest floor is alive with elephant tracks and buffalo droppings — these giants roam freely in the lower zones. Arrive at Met Station (3,050m) as afternoon mist rolls in. Hot dinner served in the dining tent as your guide briefs you on tomorrow's challenging ascent.
Met Station to Mackinder's Camp (4,200m)
Today's trek is the most physically demanding — and the most visually spectacular. Leave Met Station and climb through the upper forest into the moorland zone, where giant heather gives way to an alien landscape of giant lobelias and groundsel trees found nowhere else on Earth. The infamous Vertical Bog awaits — a steep, waterlogged section of trail that tests every trekker's resolve. Trekking poles are essential here. As you gain altitude, the vegetation shrinks and the views expand dramatically — rolling moorland stretching to distant horizons. Arrive at Mackinder's Camp (4,200m) nestled in the stunning Teleki Valley, directly beneath the jagged twin peaks of Batian (5,199m) and Nelion (5,188m). Afternoon acclimatization walk toward the base of the peaks. Watch for rock hyrax sunning themselves on boulders and augur buzzards circling overhead.
Acclimatization Day at Mackinder's Camp
A crucial rest and acclimatization day that dramatically increases your summit success rate. Your guide leads optional hikes to nearby alpine tarns and valleys. Visit the beautiful Hausberg Col or explore the otherworldly landscape around the Lewis Glacier — one of the last equatorial glaciers on Earth, retreating visibly year by year. The Teleki Valley is home to unique high-altitude wildlife: rock hyrax (the elephant's closest living relative), scarlet-tufted malachite sunbirds feeding on giant lobelia nectar, and the elusive Mount Kenya mole-rat. Your guide monitors your oxygen saturation and heart rate with a pulse oximeter. Drink plenty of water — hydration is your best weapon against altitude sickness. Early dinner and early sleep — tomorrow's summit push begins at 2:00 AM.
Summit Day: Point Lenana (4,985m)
The alarm sounds at 2:00 AM. Hot tea and biscuits by headlamp, then begin the summit push in darkness. The trail climbs steeply through scree and rocky terrain, each step demanding focus and willpower. The cold is intense — temperatures drop to -10°C at this altitude. As you gain height, the first light of dawn begins to paint the eastern horizon in bands of gold and crimson. Reach Point Lenana (4,985m) just as the sun breaks over the horizon — the sunrise from Africa's second-highest trekking summit is absolutely extraordinary. On clear mornings, Mount Kilimanjaro's snow-capped dome is visible 340km to the south. The Diamond Couloir and the imposing faces of Batian and Nelion tower above you, their glaciers glinting in the first light. Celebrate with photos at the summit sign, then begin the long descent to Mackinder's Camp for a well-earned breakfast. Continue descending to Met Station (3,050m) for overnight.
Met Station to Naro Moru Gate
After a celebratory breakfast, begin the final descent through the montane forest back to Naro Moru Gate. The downhill trek feels entirely different — with the pressure of the summit behind you, every step is lighter. Keep your eyes peeled for forest wildlife: troops of sykes monkeys, bushbuck hiding in the undergrowth, and colorful forest birds including the crowned eagle. Arrive at Naro Moru Gate for sign-out and collection of your summit certificate. Transfer to a nearby lodge in Naro Moru town for a hot shower, cold beer, and a well-deserved celebration dinner.
Naro Moru to Nairobi
After a leisurely breakfast, bid farewell to Mt. Kenya's magnificent silhouette and drive south through the scenic Central Highlands back to Nairobi. Your guide shares stories from 15 years of mountain adventures as the landscape transitions from highland farms to the bustling capital. Drop-off at your Nairobi hotel or Jomo Kenyatta International Airport. Your summit certificate — proof that you stood on the third-highest point in Africa — is a keepsake for life.
Best Time to Visit
Best climbing conditions during the dry seasons: January to March (calving season warmth) and June to October (driest, clearest skies). July-September offers the most stable weather with minimal rainfall. Avoid the long rains (April-May) and short rains (November) when trails become dangerously slippery and visibility drops significantly.
