Tour Highlights
Day-by-Day Itinerary
Nairobi to Lake Nakuru National Park
6:00 AM — Your driver-guide collects you from your Nairobi hotel and you head north-west towards the Great Rift Valley. The Namanga highway climbs through the green highlands before the earth drops away at the escarpment viewpoint — pause here to take in the vast valley floor stretching below, a patchwork of farmland, extinct volcanoes, and shimmering soda lakes. The descent through the escarpment is dramatic, hairpin bends revealing new panoramas at every turn.
By 9:30 AM you enter Lake Nakuru National Park, a compact jewel nestled on the Rift Valley floor. This is a rhino sanctuary — home to both black and white rhinos — and your guide wastes no time navigating towards the bush where these prehistoric giants browse. The alkaline lake itself is ringed with thousands of flamingos, their pink reflections shimmering across the water like a living watercolour. Greater and lesser flamingos feed in the shallows alongside pelicans, cormorants, and African fish eagles that patrol from the treetops.
After lunch at your safari lodge, the afternoon game drive takes you through the park's famous yellow-barked acacia forest — the ethereal fever tree woodland where Rothschild's giraffes move between the pale trunks like stately ghosts. Watch for waterbuck grazing the lake margins, buffalo herds in the open grassland, and if fortune favours, one of Nakuru's famous tree-climbing lions draped across a branch. The light turns amber as the sun sinks behind the Rift Valley wall, and you return to your lodge with flamingo-pink skies reflected in the lake.
Lake Nakuru to Masai Mara National Reserve
6:30 AM — An early morning game drive around Lake Nakuru for your final encounters — the rhinos are most active at dawn, their armoured silhouettes moving through the mist rising off the lake. Your guide positions the Land Cruiser for close-up photographs as a white rhino grazes barely thirty metres away, its enormous horn catching the early light.
After breakfast, you depart south-west towards the world-renowned Masai Mara. The drive of roughly five hours takes you through Narok town and across the wheat fields of the Loita Plains, entering Maasai country where herdsmen wrapped in bright red shukas walk alongside their cattle. The landscape transforms gradually — rolling farmland gives way to the Mara's endless golden savannah, studded with flat-topped acacia trees stretching to the horizon.
Collect your packed lunch and enter the reserve by early afternoon for an extended game drive. The Mara delivers immediately — vast herds of wildebeest and zebra blanket the plains, stalked by prides of lion and solitary leopards hidden in the croton thickets. The Mara River winds through the reserve, its banks patrolled by enormous Nile crocodiles. Watch for cheetah at speed across the open grassland, elegant topi standing sentinel on the ridgelines, and massive hippo pods in the river. Sunset in the Mara is unforgettable — the sky blazes orange as silhouettes of giraffe and acacia trees create the iconic African tableau.
Full Day — Masai Mara National Reserve
6:00 AM — Wake to the distant roar of lions and the chatter of weaver birds outside your lodge. Head out into the cool dawn air for the morning game drive — this is when the Mara's predators are most active. Your guide reads the bush like a book, following fresh tracks through dew-damp grass. A cheetah crouches on a termite mound, scanning the plains for Thomson's gazelle. Nearby, a leopard descends from a sausage tree, her spotted coat melting into the dappled shade.
Drive to the Mara River where enormous Nile crocodiles lie motionless on the sandy banks — their stillness deceptive, their speed terrifying when prey approaches. Hippo pods surface and submerge in the deeper pools, grunting territorial warnings. During migration season (July–October), this stretch of river hosts one of nature's most dramatic spectacles — thousands of wildebeest hurling themselves into the current.
Return to your safari lodge for lunch and a rest during the midday heat. The afternoon drive explores new sectors — perhaps tracking a pride of lions teaching their cubs to stalk through the tall golden grass, or finding a congregation of elephants in the riverine forest where fig trees and wild olive provide shade and forage. As the golden hour deepens, the Mara becomes a photographer's paradise — giraffe silhouettes against the enormous sky, secretary birds strutting through the grassland, and the distant calls of hyenas echoing across the plains as darkness gathers.
Masai Mara to Amboseli National Park
6:00 AM — A dawn game drive in the Mara for one final encounter — the golden light catches a herd of elephants moving through the mist, trunks swinging, calves tucked between their mothers' legs. Your guide navigates to a favourite big-cat zone for a last chance at a kill sighting before you bid the Mara farewell.
After breakfast, you begin the long drive south to Amboseli National Park. The journey of roughly six to seven hours crosses the Rift Valley and heads towards the Tanzanian border, the landscape transitioning from rolling green highlands to open semi-arid plains. As you approach Amboseli in the late afternoon, Mount Kilimanjaro reveals itself on the southern horizon — Africa's highest peak, its snow-capped summit floating above the clouds like a mirage.
Arrive at your safari lodge and settle in. An evening game drive takes you through Amboseli's swamplands where the park's legendary elephant herds gather — matriarchs with tusks that nearly touch the ground leading their families against the backdrop of Kilimanjaro's purple evening silhouette. The open terrain makes for exceptional game viewing as zebra, wildebeest, and giraffe share the golden plains. Watch for crowned cranes in the wetlands and bat-eared foxes emerging from their burrows as the stars fill the enormous African sky.
Amboseli to Tsavo East National Park
5:30 AM — Rise before the sun for Amboseli's signature moment: Kilimanjaro at dawn. The mountain's glaciers glow pink and gold in the first light while elephant families are already on the move, their silhouettes crossing the dried lake bed in single file — Africa's most iconic photograph, and it's happening right before your eyes. Your guide positions the Land Cruiser perfectly for the shot.
After breakfast, drive east towards Tsavo East National Park — Kenya's largest park, spanning over 13,000 square kilometres of raw, untamed wilderness. The journey takes roughly four to five hours through the Kimana corridor, the landscape transitioning from Amboseli's open grasslands to Tsavo's wilder, semi-arid bushland. The iron-rich red soil is immediately distinctive — everything here has a rust-coloured tint, including the famous red elephants who dust-bathe until coated in crimson earth.
Arrive at your safari lodge for lunch, then head out for an afternoon game drive along the Galana River. Massive crocodiles bask on the sandy banks while hippo pods eye you suspiciously. Visit Aruba Dam, where during the dry season hundreds of elephants, buffalo, and zebra converge at the water's edge — one of Tsavo's most spectacular wildlife concentrations. Scan the open red-earth plains for lion prides, giraffes browsing the commiphora scrub, and herds of buffalo kicking up clouds of crimson dust.
Tsavo East to Diani Beach
6:30 AM — Your final early morning game drive through Tsavo East's vast red-earth plains. The low golden light catches dust kicked up by elephant herds heading to water, and you may spot a pride of lions resting near the Voi River before the heat of the day. Visit the dramatic Lugard Falls, where the Galana River forces through narrow sculptured rock channels carved over millennia — the swirling colours in the rock are mesmerising.
After breakfast, pack up and prepare for your coastal transfer.
**Your Coastal Transfer — Two Great Options:**
**Option A: First Class SGR Madaraka Express** — Board at Voi Station for Kenya's modern high-speed train. Settle into air-conditioned first-class comfort with large picture windows as the Madaraka Express glides through Tsavo's vast wilderness. Spot elephants, giraffes, and perhaps even big cats from your reclining seat as the landscape transitions from red-earth savannah to lush coastal lowland. Arrive at Mombasa Terminus by 2:00 PM, where your C.A.T.S representative meets you for the scenic ~1.5 hr drive south to your Diani Beach hotel — arriving by approximately 3:30 PM.
**Option B: Continue in Your 4×4** — Prefer the open road? Your guide drives you directly to the coast via Voi and the Mombasa Highway, the landscape transforming from dry savannah to tropical coastal lowland as baobab trees give way to coconut palms and mango orchards. Cross the Likoni Ferry with views of Mombasa's historic harbour, then continue south to Diani Beach, arriving by early afternoon.
Either way, your grand safari ends where the Indian Ocean begins — white coral sand, turquoise waters, and the warm coastal breeze welcoming you to paradise.
