5-Day Amboseli & Tsavo Safari to Diani Beach | Big Five
Kilimanjaro, Red Elephants & Diani Beach
Kenya's classic bush-to-beach journey through three magnificent southern parks. Begin beneath Kilimanjaro's glaciers in Amboseli, watching elephant super-herds silhouetted against Africa's tallest mountain. Cross into Tsavo East's vast red-earth plains — legendary red elephants, the sculpted rock channels of Lugard Falls, and the wildlife-rich Aruba Dam. Then explore Tsavo West's volcanic wonderland: crystal-clear Mzima Springs, the otherworldly Shetani Lava Flow, and the rugged Ngulia rhino sanctuary. The finale: board the first-class SGR Madaraka Express from Mtito Andei or drive directly to Diani Beach's white sands and warm turquoise waters.
Tour Highlights
Day-by-Day Itinerary
Nairobi to Amboseli National Park
6:00 AM — Your C.A.T.S driver-guide collects you from your Nairobi hotel. The 4×4 Land Cruiser heads south on the Namanga Road, leaving the city behind as the Athi Plains open wide — Maasai herdsmen in bright red shukas guide their cattle through the early morning, and the open grasslands stretch to the horizon.
Mount Kilimanjaro begins to materialise on the southern skyline — a snow-capped giant shimmering above the haze, growing more commanding with every kilometre. Stop for breakfast en route at a local café, then continue south.
Arrive at Amboseli National Park by late morning. After checking into your safari lodge and enjoying lunch, set out for an afternoon game drive across the park's wide-open plains. Amboseli's flat terrain makes for extraordinary wildlife viewing — enormous elephant herds parade across dried lake beds with Kilimanjaro filling the entire southern sky behind them. Navigate the papyrus-fringed swamps fed by the mountain's underground springs, where hippos surface lazily and crowned cranes stalk the shallows. Watch for lion prides resting beneath yellow-barked acacia trees as the golden afternoon light deepens and fish eagles call across the wetlands.
Full Day in Amboseli National Park
5:30 AM — Rise before dawn for Amboseli's best-kept secret: the clearest Kilimanjaro views come at first light, before clouds wrap the summit by mid-morning. Step outside and watch the peak glow rose-pink, then gold, as sunrise strikes the glacial ice cap.
6:30 AM — The morning game drive takes you through dried lake beds where dust devils spiral skyward, green swamps alive with birdsong, and acacia woodland where weaverbirds build their intricate hanging nests. Elephant family groups of twenty or more move in slow procession — matriarchs with tusks sweeping the ground leading tiny calves barely knee-high. Every sighting carries the Kilimanjaro backdrop.
Climb Observation Hill for a breathtaking 360-degree panorama: elephant herds trace dark lines across the pale lake bed below, swamplands shimmer green to the west, and Kilimanjaro towers above it all.
Return for lunch. The afternoon drive explores the southern marshes where buffalo herds congregate, spotted hyenas lope across the open grassland, and the shy bat-eared fox peers from its burrow entrance. As sunset paints the sky amber, elephants silhouetted against Kilimanjaro's purple evening profile create one of Africa's most unforgettable scenes.
Amboseli to Tsavo East National Park
6:30 AM — A farewell morning game drive in Amboseli as Kilimanjaro's snowcap glows in the early light. Elephants are already moving between the swamps, their breath visible in the cool air. Savour these final mountain moments.
After breakfast, depart east towards Tsavo East National Park. The route takes you through the Chyulu Hills corridor — rolling green volcanic hills that form the backdrop to some of Kenya's most beautiful scenery. The landscape gradually flattens and dries as you enter Tsavo territory, the vegetation thinning to reveal vast red-earth savannah stretching to the horizon.
Arrive at Tsavo East by early afternoon — Kenya's largest national park, a wilderness the size of a small country. After checking in and enjoying lunch, head out for an afternoon game drive. This is where you encounter Tsavo's legendary red elephants — enormous herds that dust-bathe in the iron-rich laterite soil until their hides glow rust-red. The vast open plains make them visible from miles away, moving like great ships across the crimson landscape. Your guide follows the Galana River where crocodiles bask on sandy banks and hippos hold their ground midstream. Watch for lion prides, giraffes browsing the scattered commiphora scrub, and the dazzling lilac-breasted roller perched on every other bush as the enormous Tsavo sky turns gold at sunset.
Tsavo East to Tsavo West National Park
6:00 AM — An early morning game drive through Tsavo East's vast wilderness. The dawn light turns the red soil golden, and the wildlife is active after the cool night. Visit Aruba Dam — a wildlife magnet where buffalo, zebra, giraffe, and waterbuck converge to drink while crocodiles patrol the shallows. Continue to Mudanda Rock, a massive whale-backed inselberg rising from the bush with sweeping views across miles of wilderness from its summit. Drive along the Galana River to Lugard Falls — not a waterfall but a series of bizarre, water-sculpted rock formations where the river forces through narrow channels carved over millennia.
After breakfast, cross from Tsavo East into Tsavo West. The landscape transforms dramatically — from flat, open savannah into rugged volcanic hills draped in dense green bush. Arrive by late morning.
Your first stop is Mzima Springs — crystal-clear water bubbles up from underground volcanic rivers, creating transparent pools where you can watch hippos gliding gracefully beneath the surface through an underwater viewing chamber. Barbel fish dart between their legs while vervet monkeys play in the fig trees overhead. Continue to the Shetani Lava Flow — a haunting expanse of jet-black volcanic rock, standing in eerie contrast to the surrounding bush. The Maasai named it "Shetani" — devil — believing the lava was released from the underworld.
An afternoon game drive through the Ngulia Hills area reveals the rhino sanctuary sheltering Kenya's recovering black rhino population, lesser kudu in the thick riverine bush, and Verreaux's eagles soaring on thermals above the escarpment. Watch for leopard draped across rocky outcrops as the Chyulu Hills catch the last golden light.
Tsavo West to Diani Beach
6:00 AM — A final sunrise game drive through Tsavo West's rugged volcanic landscape. The early light catches the rocky terrain in sharp relief — klipspringer balance on boulder faces, and the morning bush comes alive with birdsong.
After breakfast, your coastal transfer begins — and you have two exciting options:
**Option A: First Class SGR Madaraka Express** — Your guide drives you to Mtito Andei SGR Station, near the park boundary. Board Kenya's modern high-speed train at 10:51 AM and settle into air-conditioned first-class comfort with large picture windows. As the Madaraka Express glides through the Tsavo wilderness, spot elephants, giraffes, and perhaps even big cats from your reclining seat — it's a game drive on rails. Snacks and refreshments are available on board. Arrive at Mombasa Terminus by 2:00 PM, where your C.A.T.S representative meets you for the scenic ~1.5-hour drive south to your Diani Beach hotel.
**Option B: Continue in Your 4×4** — Prefer the open road? Your guide drives you directly to the coast via the Mombasa Highway, passing through Tsavo's vast plains as the dry bushland gradually gives way to tropical coastal lowlands — baobab trees replaced by coconut palms and mango orchards. Arrive at your Diani Beach resort by approximately 2:00 PM.
The transformation is extraordinary — from volcanic wilderness to white-sand paradise in a single morning. Warm Indian Ocean waters, swaying palms, and powder-soft sand welcome you to the coast.
