Day-by-Day Itinerary
Nairobi to Ol Pejeta – Mount Kenya Vistas & Big Five Country
At 6:30 AM, your group gathers in Nairobi and climbs aboard a shared 4x4 Land Cruiser Jeep, water on board, as the vehicle heads north on the A2 highway. The road takes you through Thika — Kenya's industrial heartland — and into the lush central highlands, where coffee and tea plantations paint the hillsides in vivid green. Past the town of Sagana, the road straightens and the landscape opens up, and then it appears: Mount Kenya, Africa's second-highest peak, its snow-dusted summits piercing the clouds like a cathedral of rock and ice. The sight from the vehicle window alone is worth the journey.
By mid-morning, you pass through the frontier town of Nanyuki, perched right on the equator — your guide may point out the marker where you officially cross into the Southern Hemisphere. Shortly after, the gates of Ol Pejeta Conservancy appear, and the world changes entirely. This 90,000-acre private conservancy, set against the dramatic backdrop of Mount Kenya, is one of East Africa's most important wildlife sanctuaries.
After check-in at your safari lodge or tented camp and a satisfying lunch, the afternoon game drive begins around 3:00 PM. Ol Pejeta is Big Five territory, and the open savannah and scattered whistling thorn acacia make wildlife spotting exceptional. Herds of Cape buffalo number in the hundreds, elephants move in family groups across the golden plains, and your guide tracks fresh lion prints in the red earth. Then comes the moment your fellow travelers have been waiting for — a visit to the enclosure of Najin and Fatu, the last two northern white rhinos on Earth. Standing in the presence of these gentle, critically endangered giants — knowing you are witnessing something the world may never see again — is profoundly moving. As the 5:00 PM light turns warm and honeyed, the conservancy glows, and you may spot a tower of reticulated giraffes — their distinct geometric patterns unique to this region — silhouetted against Mount Kenya's fading outline. You return to camp as the first stars appear.
Morning Game Drive, Chimpanzee Sanctuary & Return to Nairobi
5:30 AM — the African dawn breaks cool and crisp at this altitude, the air carrying the scent of dew on dry grass. Your group sets out for an early game drive when the bush is at its most active. A spotted hyena trots back to its den, jackals yip across the plains, and a black rhino — Ol Pejeta is home to the largest population of black rhinos in East Africa — grazes at the edge of a thicket, its prehistoric silhouette framed by the pink-orange horizon. The early light is a photographer's dream, casting long shadows and golden halos around every creature.
By 8:00 AM, you visit Ol Pejeta's Sweetwaters Chimpanzee Sanctuary — the only place in Kenya where you can see chimpanzees. These orphaned and rescued chimps, brought from conflict zones in central Africa, swing through the trees, groom each other, and display remarkably human expressions and behaviors. The sanctuary staff share each chimp's story — tales of rescue and rehabilitation that are both heartbreaking and hopeful.
After a full breakfast back at the lodge, you take one last drive through the conservancy around 10:00 AM, soaking in final glimpses of zebra, eland, hartebeest, and perhaps a martial eagle perched regally on a dead tree. The vehicle then heads south on the A2, retracing the route through Nanyuki and the central highlands. The group shares favorite moments — the rhinos, the chimps, the Mount Kenya views — as the landscape shifts from savannah to farmland to the urban outskirts of Nairobi. You arrive back in the city between 3:30 and 4:30 PM, carrying memories of one of Kenya's most extraordinary conservation stories.
