Many visitors can obtain a Tanzania tourist visa on arrival, while an online application is also available through the official immigration.go.tz portal. Applying in advance can reduce uncertainty at arrival. Always confirm your nationality’s current rules, as some visitors require a referral visa and cannot rely on visa on arrival.
A single-entry tourist visa is commonly USD 50 for many nationalities and USD 100 for US citizens, payable under the method specified by immigration. Prepare a passport valid for at least six months, return or onward ticket, accommodation details and sufficient travel information. Certain nationalities are visa-exempt; official immigration guidance is definitive.
The East Africa Tourist Visa is valid for Kenya, Uganda and Rwanda only; it does not permit entry to Tanzania. Travellers combining a Kenya and Tanzania safari need the relevant Kenyan eTA and Tanzania entry permission separately.
Tanzania requires a Yellow Fever vaccination certificate for travellers arriving from, or with a qualifying transit through, a Yellow Fever risk country; it is not routinely required for direct arrivals from non-risk countries. Seek individual medical advice about Yellow Fever, Hepatitis A/B, typhoid, tetanus and malaria prevention. Carry your certificate where applicable.
Safari travellers often arrive at Julius Nyerere International Airport, Dar es Salaam (DAR), or Kilimanjaro International Airport (JRO). The Tanzanian Shilling (TZS) is the local currency, and USD is widely accepted in the tourism sector; use clean, recent notes. Zanzibar is part of Tanzania for immigration purposes, so no separate Zanzibar tourist visa is required. Work, volunteering, filming and extended stays need the appropriate permit or special pass—tourist status does not authorise work.
