Plan your Kenya safari entry formalities with time to spare.
Kenya replaced its eVisa system with the Electronic Travel Authorisation (eTA) in January 2024. Most visitors should apply through the official etaKenya.go.ke portal before travel. Allow at least 3–7 business days and do not rely on last-minute processing. Fees, eligibility and requirements can change; check the official site before payment.
Have a passport valid for at least six months beyond arrival, with adequate blank pages, a recent passport photograph, return or onward ticket and accommodation confirmation. The standard eTA charge has commonly been USD 30 for most travellers, plus any processing charge shown by the official portal. Some nationalities, including citizens of certain African states and Singapore, may be exempt or subject to different arrangements—verify nationality-specific rules.
The East Africa Tourist Visa costs USD 100 and can cover tourism in Kenya, Uganda and Rwanda for up to 90 days when issued by the country of first entry. It does not cover Tanzania. Transit arrangements depend on nationality, route and time in Kenya; consult the eTA portal or your airline for current guidance.
A Yellow Fever certificate is required for travellers arriving from, or transiting for more than 12 hours through, a country with Yellow Fever transmission risk; it is not a universal entry requirement. Discuss Yellow Fever, Hepatitis A/B, typhoid, tetanus and malaria prophylaxis with a travel-health clinician well before departure. Carry evidence of any required vaccination with your passport.
International safari arrivals commonly use Jomo Kenyatta International Airport in Nairobi (JKIA) or Moi International Airport in Mombasa. The Kenya Shilling (KES) is the local currency, while clean, recent USD notes are widely accepted in tourism areas.
