Ol Pejeta Day Trip from Nairobi | Black Rhinos & Big Five
Refuge for the Big Five and Chimpanzees
Home to the last two northern white rhinos on Earth and Kenya's highest concentration of predators — Ol Pejeta Conservancy is conservation at its most powerful. Expect Big Five encounters across open savannah backed by the snow-capped peaks of Mt. Kenya, a visit to the chimpanzee sanctuary, and up-close moments with critically endangered black rhinos in the dedicated rhino enclosure. Lions, leopards, hyenas, and the rare African wild dog roam freely here. This is a safari with purpose — where every game drive supports one of Africa's most important conservation stories.

Ol Pejeta Conservancy Day Trip
5:00 AM — While most of Nairobi still sleeps, your private 4x4 Land Cruiser with pop-up roof rolls up to your hotel. Your driver-guide greets you warmly, hands you a cold water, and you head north on the A2 highway. The route climbs through the lush pineapple plantations around Thika, past the thundering Fourteen Falls, and continues through the fertile highlands of Sagana where coffee bushes line the hillsides.
Around 7:00 AM you pull over at a café in Sagana for breakfast — fresh eggs, toast, tropical fruit, and piping-hot Kenyan chai — the perfect fuel before pushing north into the Laikipia highlands.
As the road unfurls toward Nanyuki, the colossal form of Mount Kenya — Africa's second-highest peak — appears through the clouds, its jagged peaks dusted with glacial ice.
By 9:00 AM you pass through Ol Pejeta's gate and the savannah opens wide. This 360-square-kilometre conservancy, set on the Laikipia Plateau with Mount Kenya as a constant backdrop, is one of Africa's most important wildlife sanctuaries — and home to a story that will move you deeply.
Your first stop is the most humbling: the enclosure of Najin and Fatu, the last two northern white rhinos on Earth. Standing in their presence, watched over by round-the-clock armed rangers, you witness the quiet dignity of a subspecies on the very edge of existence — a sight that stays with you forever and a powerful reminder of why conservation matters.
The morning game drive continues across golden grasslands where all of the Big Five roam: black rhinos browse in dense thickets, a pride of lions rests beneath a flat-topped acacia, buffalo herds darken distant hillsides, elephants amble along seasonal streams, and if fortune favours you, a leopard drapes itself across a branch in the riverine forest.
Around 12:30 PM you pause for lunch at the conservancy's restaurant, refuelling with views of the waterhole where animals come to drink. In the early afternoon you visit the Chimpanzee Sanctuary — the only place in Kenya where you can see these charismatic primates. Originally rescued from the illegal bushmeat and pet trade in Central Africa, the chimps swing, groom, and play in forested enclosures while a keeper shares their individual rescue stories.
By 2:30 PM you begin the scenic return south, the afternoon sun warming Mount Kenya's flanks in shades of amber. You arrive back in Nairobi at approximately 6:30–7:00 PM, carrying with you the profound privilege of having stood with the rarest animals on the planet.
