Day-by-Day Itinerary

Day 1

The "Into Africa" Experience

8:00 AM — Your private 4x4 Land Cruiser with pop-up roof arrives at your Nairobi hotel or place of choice. Your driver-guide greets you with a warm smile and cold bottled water as you set off through the leafy suburbs of Karen and Langata, where bougainvillea cascades over garden walls and the air carries the sweet scent of red earth and eucalyptus. The city's glass towers slowly fade in the rear-view mirror, replaced by jacaranda-lined avenues and acacia-dotted ridgelines — old colonial Nairobi coming alive through your guide's storytelling.

**🏛️ 8:45 AM — Karen Blixen Museum** *📍 Open daily (including weekends & public holidays): 8:30 AM – 5:30 PM*

You arrive at the beautifully preserved farmhouse nestled at the foot of the Ngong Hills — the home where Danish author Karen Blixen, writing under the pen name Isak Dinesen, crafted her immortal memoir *Out of Africa*. Step inside rooms furnished with her original belongings: the hand-wound gramophone that once filled these walls with music, the mahogany writing desk where Africa poured onto the page, sepia photographs of safari camps and Denys Finch Hatton's biplane. Walk onto the stone veranda and the Ngong Hills roll along the western horizon in exactly the silhouette Blixen described — unchanged after a century. The surrounding gardens are a tranquil world of indigenous trees, coffee plants, and darting sunbirds. Allow 45 minutes to 1 hour to soak in this romantic time capsule of a Kenya that existed a hundred years ago.

**🐘 10:30 AM — David Sheldrick Wildlife Trust**

A short drive through Langata brings you to the world's most successful orphaned elephant rescue programme, timed perfectly for the 11:00 AM public feeding. The wooden gates swing open and a parade of tiny elephants charges out — ears flapping wide, trunks swinging with unbridled joy, red-earth dust puffing under their wobbly legs. Each calf has a name, a rescue story, and a dedicated keeper who sleeps beside them every night. One was pulled from a well in Tsavo. Another was found standing alone beside her poached mother. The keepers share every heartbreaking and triumphant detail as the babies guzzle milk from oversized bottles, then tumble into the red-mud wallow, spraying each other — and their delighted audience — with gleeful abandon. You'll hear their tiny trumpets, feel the ground vibrate under their play-charging feet, and fall completely in love. This is conservation you can feel in your chest.

**🍽️ 12:00 PM — Lunch** *Your choice of two iconic Nairobi restaurants:*

**OPTION A — Karen Blixen Coffee Garden:** Soak up the Africa experience among ancient trees, manicured gardens, and floral blooms. This delightful colonial-era restaurant sits within the Karen Blixen complex — a tranquil time capsule where you'll enjoy a leisurely lunch from a full menu of local and international cuisine, surrounded by gentle tropical birdsong and views of the Ngong Hills.

**OPTION B — The Carnivore Restaurant:** Nairobi's world-famous open-fire grill — a legendary dining experience and a must-visit for meat lovers. Succulent cuts of game and traditional meats are roasted on Maasai swords over a massive charcoal pit and carved tableside in an all-you-can-eat feast. From crocodile and ostrich to lamb chops and prime beef ribs, the flavours are bold, smoky, and unforgettable. Surrender your flag when you've had enough — if you can!

**🦒 1:30 PM — Giraffe Centre, Langata**

From a delicious lunch to gentle giants. At the internationally renowned Giraffe Centre, you climb a raised wooden platform and come eye-to-eye with endangered Rothschild's giraffes — one of the rarest giraffe subspecies on the planet. Their enormous, liquid-dark eyes blink slowly as their long, blue-black tongues curl gently around food pellets in your outstretched palm — close enough to feel their warm breath on your skin. Lean in for the famous "giraffe kiss" and your guide captures the moment on camera. Below the platform, Kenyan schoolchildren squeal with delight as giraffes bend their impossibly long necks toward them — a joyful scene that reminds you why conservation matters. The centre's education programme explains the decades-long effort to bring this subspecies back from the brink of extinction.

**📿 2:30 PM — Kazuri Beads Factory**

The Kazuri story began when two single mothers, filled with artistic vision and self-determination, created a tiny workshop fashioning pottery and beads to support themselves and their children. What started as a two-woman experiment has grown into one of Nairobi's most inspiring enterprises — over 350 single mothers now handcrafting their futures through art, independence, and creative brilliance. *Kazuri* means "small and beautiful" in Swahili, and the name fits perfectly.

Stroll along rows of brightly coloured ceramic beads in every shade imaginable, watch the artisans at work as they shape, dry, and hand-paint each bead with extraordinary precision, and feel the creative energy that pulses through this remarkable workspace. At the gift shop, you can support this growing women's empowerment enterprise with handcrafted souvenirs for yourself, friends, and family — meaningful gifts you'll be proud to share, each one carrying the story of a Kenyan woman building her own future.

**3:30 PM — Return Transfer**

What a fitting end to the Into Africa experience — a day filled with romantic history, adorable baby elephants, a legendary lunch, gentle giraffe giants, and women's artistry. Hop back into your safari vehicle for the relaxed drive back to your Nairobi hotel or place of your choosing, arriving by approximately 4:00 PM.

C.A.T.S invites you to discover the Nairobi that most visitors never see — wild, creative, and deeply human.
