9-Day Kilimanjaro Climb | Northern Circuit Route Trek
The Longest, Most Remote & Highest Success-Rate Kilimanjaro Trek
Kilimanjaro's ultimate trek — nine extraordinary days circumnavigating nearly the entire mountain on its longest and most remote route. The Northern Circuit takes the Lemosho approach through pristine western rainforest, then diverges across rarely-visited northern terrain that most climbers never see. Expect complete solitude, 360-degree panoramic views from every angle of Africa's highest peak, and passage through every ecological zone — from tropical forest to arctic summit. With unmatched acclimatization delivering a 96%+ summit success rate, this is the definitive Kilimanjaro experience for those who want it all.
Tour Highlights
Day-by-Day Itinerary
Londorossi Gate to Big Tree Camp (2,780m)
Begin at Londorossi Gate on the western slopes. Trek through rich montane rainforest alive with Colobus monkeys and birdsong. Arrive at Big Tree Camp nestled in a forest clearing.
Big Tree Camp (2,780m) to Shira 1 Camp (3,505m)
Ascend through upper forest into moorland. Emerge onto the vast Shira Plateau with views of Kibo ahead.
Shira 1 to Shira 2 Camp (3,840m)
Cross the Shira Plateau. Optional hike to Shira Cathedral. Gentle acclimatization day.
Shira 2 to Lava Tower (4,630m) to Moir Hut (4,200m)
Here the Northern Circuit diverges from other routes. Climb to the Lava Tower for acclimatization, then head north to Moir Hut — a remote camp at the base of the Lent Group pinnacles. You're now on terrain most climbers never see.
Moir Hut (4,200m) to Buffalo Camp (4,020m)
Traverse the remote northern slopes — the quietest part of Kilimanjaro. The trail passes through stark alpine desert with views stretching to the Kenyan border. This section of the mountain is raw, wild, and utterly beautiful. Camp at Buffalo Camp with northern glaciers above.
Buffalo Camp (4,020m) to Third Cave/School Hut (4,720m)
Continue the northern traverse, passing Third Cave and ascending to School Hut near Kibo's base. Views of Mawenzi's spires across the saddle. The gradual altitude gain over days 4-6 is what gives this route its extraordinary success rate.
School Hut (4,720m) to Crater Camp (5,729m) — Optional
For the ultimate experience, camp inside the crater at 5,729m — one of the highest campsites in Africa. Alternatively, remain at School Hut. Afternoon exploring the crater rim area. Early rest for summit night.
Summit — Uhuru Peak (5,895m) then Descent to Mweka Camp
Summit push from crater camp (short) or School Hut (midnight start). Stand atop Uhuru Peak — the Roof of Africa — and take in the view of the Furtwängler Glacier and the African plains below. Long descent to Mweka Camp through alpine desert, moorland, and forest.
Mweka Camp to Mweka Gate — Farewell
Final rainforest descent. Collect your summit certificate at Mweka Gate. Transfer to hotel.
