Day-by-Day Itinerary

Day 1

Nairobi to Masai Mara National Reserve

~270km | Approx. 5-6 hrs

6:00 AM — Your driver-guide picks you up from your Nairobi hotel and you head west towards the Masai Mara. The drive takes roughly five to six hours, climbing through the fertile highlands before the landscape drops away at the Great Rift Valley escarpment — pause here for sweeping views of this enormous geological wonder, the valley floor stretching to the horizon far below.

Descend through Narok town and continue across the wheat fields and Loita Plains into Maasai country, passing herdsmen wrapped in bright red shukas walking alongside their cattle. By late morning, the golden grasslands of the Mara open before you — flat-topped acacia trees stretching endlessly beneath an enormous sky. Collect your packed lunch and enter the reserve for an extended afternoon game drive.

The Mara's wildlife density is unmatched — wildebeest, zebra, and Thomson's gazelle blanket the plains while your guide tracks lions through the tall grass and watches for cheetah scanning from termite mounds. Elephants move through the riverine forest, topi stand sentinel on the ridgelines, and as the golden hour arrives, giraffe silhouettes against the blazing sunset create the quintessential African scene. Check into your safari lodge as darkness falls and hyenas begin their evening chorus.

Day 2

Full Day — Masai Mara National Reserve

6:00 AM — Wake to birdsong and the distant rumble of the bush. Head out for the dawn drive when predators are most active and the light is a soft gold across the savannah. Your guide follows fresh tracks through dew-damp grass, reading the landscape for signs of the hunt.

Drive to the Mara River where enormous Nile crocodiles bask on the sandy banks and hippo pods dominate the deeper pools — during migration season (July–October), the wildebeest river crossings here are one of nature's most dramatic spectacles. Explore the Mara Triangle's rolling hills where visibility is exceptional, spotting elephants in the riverine forest, hyena dens where playful cubs tumble outside their burrows, and perhaps a leopard draped across a branch in the croton thickets along the Talek River.

Return for lunch at your safari lodge. The afternoon drive takes you to new sectors — each revealing fresh encounters. Watch for a cheetah hunt unfolding across the open grasslands, a pride of lions teaching their cubs to stalk, or a congregation of vultures circling above a fresh kill. As dusk approaches, the Mara glows amber and the calls of nightjars fill the cooling air.

Day 3

Masai Mara — Final Game Drive & Fly to Diani Beach

6:30 AM — Your final morning in the Mara. Rise early for one last game drive through the cool dawn air — the bush is electric at first light. You may catch a lion pride returning from a night hunt, or watch a cheetah stretching and scanning the plains for breakfast. An optional hot air balloon safari lifts you silently above the savannah at sunrise, the herds spreading below like a living carpet, followed by a champagne bush breakfast — an experience you will never forget.

Return to your safari lodge, pack up, and transfer to the Mara airstrip by late morning. The bush plane lifts off over the golden grasslands, offering a bird's-eye perspective of the herds, the winding Mara River, and the vast reserve shrinking below. Fly to Wilson Airport in Nairobi, then connect to a domestic flight to Ukunda airstrip near Diani Beach — total flying time is roughly two hours.

By mid-afternoon, you arrive at the coast. The transition from dusty savannah to tropical paradise is immediate — warm ocean air, coconut palms swaying overhead, and the turquoise Indian Ocean stretching to the horizon. Check into your beach resort and let the rhythm of the waves take over. Walk barefoot along Diani's powder-white coral sand and feel the warm Indian Ocean lap at your toes. Sundowners on the beach as the sky turns gold.

Day 4

Diani Beach — Reef & Relaxation

Wake to the sound of waves and tropical birdsong filtering through the palm canopy overhead. Your first full day on Diani Beach — Africa's leading beach destination — is yours to savour at your own pace. The powder-white coral sand stretches endlessly before you, lapped by bath-warm turquoise water so clear you can see your toes in waist-deep ocean.

Spend the morning swimming, floating on the gentle swell, or snorkelling right off the beach — the coral reef just offshore is home to parrotfish, angelfish, sea turtles, and colourful reef fish in stunning variety. After a leisurely lunch, explore what Diani has to offer: a glass-bottom boat ride over the reef, stand-up paddleboarding in the calm lagoon, or a visit to the Colobus Conservation Centre where endangered black-and-white colobus monkeys swing through the coastal forest canopy.

As evening approaches, enjoy fresh seafood as the sun sets over the palm-lined shore and the warm ocean breeze carries the scent of frangipani. The contrast with yesterday's dusty savannah could not be more perfect.

Day 5

Diani Beach — Ocean Adventures

Another day of Indian Ocean bliss with options for adventure. For the active, Diani is one of East Africa's premier kitesurfing destinations — consistent winds and a wide sandy beach make it world-class. Try deep-sea fishing in the Pemba Channel where marlin, sailfish, and tuna run, or explore the underwater world on a scuba diving excursion to the outer reef.

Alternatively, consider a half-day excursion to the nearby Shimba Hills National Reserve — roughly forty-five minutes from Diani. This lush coastal rainforest is home to Kenya's only population of the magnificent sable antelope, forest elephants, leopards, and the beautiful Sheldrick Falls cascading through dense tropical vegetation. Return to your resort by mid-afternoon for pool time and beach relaxation.

As the afternoon softens, a sunset dhow cruise along the coast offers the perfect way to end the day — sailing on a traditional wooden vessel as the sky turns gold and pink over the Indian Ocean, the outline of the coast darkening against a spectacular tropical sunset.

Day 6

Diani Beach — Wasini Island & Marine Park

An optional full-day trip to Wasini Island and Kisite-Mpunguti Marine Park — Kenya's finest marine excursion. Drive south to the sleepy fishing village of Shimoni and board a traditional dhow that sails across the turquoise channel. Watch for pods of bottlenose and spinner dolphins — sightings are virtually guaranteed in these waters. At Kisite Marine Park, snorkel above pristine coral gardens alive with tropical fish — butterflyfish, lionfish, parrotfish, and blue-spotted rays — in crystal-clear visibility that rivals the Maldives.

A Swahili seafood feast on Wasini Island — fresh crab, grilled fish, coconut rice, and chapati — is served under the shade of mangrove trees by the water's edge. The island's coral gardens and ancient baobabs add a sense of timelessness.

Return to Diani by late afternoon, salt-crusted and sun-warmed. Or simply spend the entire day at your resort — every hour on Diani's white sand and in its warm turquoise water is time magnificently spent.

Day 7

Diani Beach — Departure

Your final morning on the Kenyan coast. Enjoy a leisurely breakfast with ocean views and one last barefoot stroll along Diani's white sand beach. Watch the local fishermen push their outrigger canoes into the morning tide, and feel the warm sand between your toes one final time. Depending on your departure schedule, you might squeeze in a last swim or browse the beach vendors for Swahili spices, kikoy fabrics, or carved soapstone keepsakes.

Transfer to Ukunda airstrip for your flight to Nairobi and onward connections, or to Moi International Airport in Mombasa. Seven days that took you from the lion-filled grasslands of the Masai Mara to the turquoise paradise of the Indian Ocean — the ultimate Kenya bush and beach holiday.
