Day-by-Day Itinerary

Nairobi to Masai Mara National Reserve

~270km | Approx. 5-6 hrs

6:00 AM — Your driver-guide picks you up from your Nairobi hotel and you head west towards the Masai Mara. The drive takes roughly five to six hours, climbing through the fertile highlands before the landscape drops away at the Great Rift Valley escarpment — pause here for sweeping views of this enormous geological wonder, the valley floor stretching to the horizon far below.

Descend through Narok town and continue across the wheat fields and Loita Plains into Maasai country, passing herdsmen wrapped in bright red shukas walking alongside their cattle. By late morning, the golden grasslands of the Mara open before you — flat-topped acacia trees stretching endlessly beneath an enormous sky. Collect your packed lunch and enter the reserve for an extended afternoon game drive.

The Mara's wildlife density is unmatched — wildebeest, zebra, and Thomson's gazelle blanket the plains while your guide tracks lions through the tall grass and watches for cheetah scanning from termite mounds. Elephants move through the riverine forest, topi stand sentinel on the ridgelines, and as the golden hour arrives, giraffe silhouettes against the blazing sunset create the quintessential African scene. Check into your safari lodge as darkness falls and hyenas begin their evening chorus.

Full Day — Masai Mara National Reserve

6:00 AM — Wake to birdsong and the distant rumble of the bush. Head out for the dawn drive when predators are most active and the light is a soft gold across the savannah. Your guide follows fresh tracks through dew-damp grass, reading the landscape for signs of the hunt.

Drive to the Mara River where enormous Nile crocodiles bask on the sandy banks and hippo pods dominate the deeper pools — during migration season (July–October), the wildebeest river crossings here are one of nature's most dramatic spectacles. Explore the Mara Triangle's rolling hills where visibility is exceptional, spotting elephants in the riverine forest, hyena dens where playful cubs tumble outside their burrows, and perhaps a leopard draped across a branch in the croton thickets along the Talek River.

Return for lunch at your safari lodge. The afternoon drive takes you to new sectors — each revealing fresh encounters. Watch for a cheetah hunt unfolding across the open grasslands, a pride of lions teaching their cubs to stalk, or a congregation of vultures circling above a fresh kill. As dusk approaches, the Mara glows amber and the calls of nightjars fill the cooling air.

Masai Mara — Final Game Drive & Fly to Diani Beach

6:30 AM — Your final morning in the Mara. Rise early for one last game drive through the cool dawn air — the bush is electric at first light. You may catch a lion pride returning from a night hunt, or watch a cheetah stretching and scanning the plains for breakfast. An optional hot air balloon safari lifts you silently above the savannah at sunrise, the herds spreading below like a living carpet, followed by a champagne bush breakfast — an experience you will never forget.

Return to your safari lodge, pack up, and transfer to the Mara airstrip by late morning. The bush plane lifts off over the golden grasslands, offering a bird's-eye perspective of the herds, the winding Mara River, and the vast reserve shrinking below. Fly to Wilson Airport in Nairobi, then connect to a domestic flight to Ukunda airstrip near Diani Beach — total flying time is roughly two hours.

By mid-afternoon, you arrive at the coast. The transition from dusty savannah to tropical paradise is immediate — warm ocean air, coconut palms swaying overhead, and the turquoise Indian Ocean stretching to the horizon. Check into your beach resort and let the rhythm of the waves take over. Walk barefoot along Diani's powder-white coral sand and feel the warm Indian Ocean lap at your toes. Sundowners on the beach as the sky turns gold.
