7-Day Kenya & Tanzania Safari | Masai Mara to Serengeti

6:00 AM. Your guide picks you up from your Nairobi hotel, and you set off westward toward the Masai Mara. The drive takes roughly five to six hours, first climbing out of the city and passing the Great Rift Valley escarpment — where you'll stop for a panoramic view of the valley floor stretching endlessly below. Continue through Narok town, the gateway to Maasai country, where red-robed herdsmen drive their cattle along dusty tracks. You collect your packed lunch en route and arrive at the Mara by early afternoon. After checking into your safari lodge, head out for your first game drive across the golden savannah. The Masai Mara's vast open plains make it one of Africa's finest wildlife theaters — expect lions lounging in the grass, elephants moving through acacia woodland, and giraffes silhouetted against the wide sky.

5:30 AM. A pre-dawn departure takes you into the Mara when predators are most active. The cool air carries the scent of dew-soaked grass as your guide tracks a cheetah family across the open plains, or follows fresh lion prints toward a pride resting near a kopje. By mid-morning, you reach the Mara River — its brown waters swirling with hippo pods and crocodiles basking on sandy banks. During migration season (July to October), this is the stage for the dramatic wildebeest crossings. You explore the Mara Triangle in the afternoon, where rolling hills carpeted in golden grass give way to acacia-dotted valleys teeming with zebra, topi, and eland. Return to your lodge at sunset as the savannah glows amber and the calls of hyenas begin echoing across the darkening plains.

6:00 AM. After an early breakfast, you depart the Masai Mara and drive south toward the Isebania border crossing into Tanzania. The drive takes several hours through Maasai pastoral land — rolling green hills, scattered manyattas, and cattle moving along red-earth tracks. At the border, your guide assists with immigration formalities while you observe the lively cross-border trade. Once in Tanzania, you continue toward the Serengeti, entering through the western corridor. The landscape transforms into the iconic endless plains — flat, golden grassland stretching to the horizon under an enormous sky. An afternoon game drive immerses you in the Serengeti's incredible wildlife density. Wildebeest and zebra herds number in the thousands, and predators — lions, cheetahs, leopards — are never far behind.

6:00 AM. A full day in the Serengeti — arguably the greatest wildlife arena on Earth. Your morning drive takes you through the Seronera Valley, the park's central hub where the Seronera River attracts leopards to its fig-tree-lined banks and huge crocodiles lurk in the deeper pools. Your guide navigates between granite kopjes — ancient rock outcrops where lions rest in the shade and hyraxes sun themselves on warm boulders. The open plains stretch in every direction, dotted with migrating herds, hunting cheetahs sprinting across the flat ground, and secretary birds stomping through the grass. After a packed lunch under an acacia tree, the afternoon drive explores different sectors, perhaps the marsh areas where elephants and buffalo gather. The Serengeti sunset is legendary — a vast orange disc dropping behind the endless horizon.

6:00 AM. One last game drive across the Serengeti's short-grass plains catches the morning light raking low over the grass, herds still gathered around scattered acacias from the night before. By mid-morning you turn east on the graded track toward Ngorongoro, climbing steadily out of the plains and into the highland forest of the Ngorongoro Conservation Area. A stop at Oldupai Gorge breaks the journey — this narrow ravine cut into the Rift Valley floor has yielded some of humanity's oldest stone tools and fossilised footprints, and the small site museum lays out nearly two million years of human prehistory in a few dusty display cases. Continuing on, the road climbs to the crater rim at 2,286 metres, where the vehicle noses over the edge and begins the steep, switchback descent down the inner wall. The crater floor opens up as a green, self-contained world — Lake Magadi's soda flats streaked pink with flamingos, herds of buffalo and wildebeest scattered across the grass, and your guide edging toward a pride of lions dozing in the open within the first half hour. A picnic lunch beside the Ngoitokitok springs comes with an audience of hippos grunting in the reed-lined pool. The afternoon is spent working the Lerai fever-tree forest for elephant bulls and, with real luck, one of the crater's remaining black rhinos grazing the short grass in plain view. You climb back up the crater wall as the light turns gold, reaching your rim-side lodge in time for a sundowner overlooking the caldera.

7:00 AM. Coffee on the rim comes with a last look down into the crater, mist still pooled over Lake Magadi far below. You leave the highlands and begin the descent through Karatu — a strip of a town ringed by coffee shambas and banana groves, the last proper settlement before the road drops toward the Rift Valley floor. The escarpment falls away in stages, temperature climbing as you lose altitude, until Lake Manyara appears below — a slender band of soda water pressed between the valley wall and the shore. Entering the park, the road plunges straight into groundwater forest: mahogany and fig trees fed by underground springs seeping out of the escarpment, thick with troops of olive baboon and blue monkey crashing through the canopy. This is one of the only places in Africa where lions regularly climb — look up into the acacia and fig branches for a tawny shape draped over a horizontal limb, a habit unique to a handful of populations across the continent. The forest opens onto floodplain and lakeshore, where elephant families wade through the shallows and thousands of lesser flamingos work the alkaline margins in a shifting pink tide. Hippos pack the shoreline pools near the Msasa River, occasionally surfacing between the wading storks and herons. You settle into your lodge on the valley wall as the sun drops over the lake.

6:30 AM. A final game drive along Lake Manyara's forest edge and floodplain makes the most of the cool morning air, when the tree-climbing lions are more likely to still be draped in the branches before the heat sends them back to ground. Baboon troops forage through the leaf litter, giraffe pick through the acacia canopy, and the flamingo-lined shore glows against the dark cliff of the Rift Valley wall. After breakfast, the drive climbs out of the valley and back up onto the Arusha plateau, passing coffee and wheat farms and the villages strung along the base of Mount Meru, reaching Arusha in around two hours. From here your onward journey splits two ways: continue on to Kilimanjaro International Airport for a flight out, or take the overland route back across the Namanga border to Nairobi, roughly seven hours further by road. Either way, the week closes with a full reel of memories — the Mara's open plains, the Serengeti's herds stretching past the horizon, the crater's dense wildlife amphitheatre, and Manyara's lions in the trees.
