Day-by-Day Itinerary

Day 1

Arrival in Zanzibar

Airport transfer

Your driver meets you at Zanzibar Airport and transfers you to your beach resort on the coast. The drive winds through palm groves, small villages with corrugated roofs and flowering gardens, and stretches of tropical greenery before the Indian Ocean appears — a breathtaking sweep of turquoise meeting powder-white sand. At the resort, you're welcomed with a fresh tropical cocktail and shown to your room. The rest of the day is yours to decompress: walk the beach barefoot, swim in the impossibly warm, crystal-clear water, or settle into a sun lounger and let the sound of gentle waves reset your internal clock. As evening falls, the sky turns from gold to deep crimson over the Indian Ocean, and the warm air carries the scent of frangipani and grilled seafood. Your first dinner on the island sets the tone for five extraordinary days ahead.

Day 2

Stone Town Full-Day Tour

8:30 AM — After breakfast, your guide collects you for a full-day immersion into Stone Town — the ancient heart of Zanzibar and a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The narrow alleys wind between coral-stone buildings with intricately carved wooden doors, each one a work of art telling the story of the household's origin, faith, and prosperity. You visit the Old Fort, the Palace Museum with its sultanate-era furnishings and rooftop ocean views, and the sobering former slave market where an Anglican cathedral now stands in remembrance of the estimated 50,000 souls who passed through here annually.

Your guide leads you deeper into the labyrinth — past tiny workshops where craftsmen carve the famous Zanzibar doors, through the aromatic spice bazaar where sacks of cloves, cinnamon, cardamom, and vanilla fill the warm air with intoxicating fragrance, and into hidden courtyards where Swahili, Arab, Indian, and European architectural influences merge in beautiful harmony. You pause at the house where Freddie Mercury was born — now a small museum celebrating the island's most famous son.

12:30 PM — Lunch at Forodhani Gardens, the legendary waterfront food market where local vendors prepare Zanzibar's signature street food: grilled octopus tentacles, urojo soup, Zanzibar pizza stuffed with minced meat and egg, and freshly pressed sugarcane juice. You eat overlooking the harbour where wooden dhows have docked for centuries.

The afternoon continues with browsing local art galleries, visiting the Darajani Market's vibrant stalls, and perhaps picking up hand-crafted souvenirs — Tingatinga paintings, kangas, and Zanzibari spice sets. You return to your beach resort by late afternoon, the transition from ancient stone alleyways to turquoise ocean feeling like stepping between centuries.

Day 3

Spice Plantation & Jozani Forest

~70 km round trip | Approx. 3 hrs driving

8:00 AM — A morning that captures the very soul of Zanzibar. Your guide drives you into the island's lush, humid interior for a spice plantation tour — the experience that earned this island its legendary title. Walking through fragrant tropical gardens, you'll see cloves drying in the sun, nutmeg fruit split open to reveal the crimson mace within, cinnamon bark peeled fresh from the trunk, black pepper clusters climbing their vines, and vanilla orchids twisting through the canopy. Your guide crushes fresh leaves between his fingers so you can smell each spice — the sharp sweetness of clove, the warm earthiness of cinnamon, the bright zing of lemongrass. Local children weave palm-leaf crowns and necklaces as gifts while you taste ripe jackfruit, starfruit, and baby bananas picked moments before.

After a traditional Swahili lunch at the plantation — fragrant rice, coconut bean curry, and fresh tropical fruit — you continue south to Jozani Chwaka Bay National Park. This dense, humid forest is the last remaining habitat of the Zanzibar red colobus monkey, an endangered primate found nowhere else on Earth. Within minutes of entering the forest, you'll spot troops of these curious rust-coloured monkeys swinging through the canopy and occasionally descending to the forest floor, their wide eyes studying visitors with obvious curiosity. A raised boardwalk leads through the mangrove ecosystem — a fascinating tangle of aerial roots, tidal channels, and crabs scuttling over exposed mud. You return to your resort by mid-afternoon with the rest of the day at leisure on the beach.

Day 4

Mnemba Atoll Snorkelling & Dolphin Tour

7:30 AM — After an early breakfast, you board a boat for the trip to Mnemba Atoll — a small coral island surrounded by some of the finest snorkelling waters in East Africa. The boat ride takes roughly thirty minutes, and as you approach the atoll, the water shifts from deep oceanic blue to luminous turquoise over the coral reef below. Keep your eyes on the surface — pods of bottlenose dolphins frequently appear in these warm currents, their dorsal fins slicing through the glassy water before they leap in silver arcs.

Slipping into the warm water with mask and fins, you're surrounded by a kaleidoscope of tropical marine life — parrotfish in electric blues and greens, butterflyfish dancing through the coral branches, angelfish gliding with effortless grace, and trumpetfish hovering vertically among the sea fans. Green sea turtles rise from the seagrass beds to breathe, hovering at the surface for a moment before descending in a graceful spiral. The coral formations themselves are extraordinary — brain corals, branching staghorns, and table corals creating an underwater cityscape alive with movement and colour.

You'll snorkel two or three different reef sites through the morning, each with its own character. Between sites, the boat drifts and fresh tropical fruit is shared. By early afternoon you're back at your resort with the rest of the day at leisure — perhaps a beachside massage, a cold drink in the shade, or simply floating in the warm Indian Ocean reliving the underwater colours.

Day 5

Beach Day & Sunset Dhow Cruise

Wake naturally to the sound of waves lapping the white sand shore. Today is a full day of tropical relaxation with the highlight saved for the golden hour. Spend the morning and afternoon however you wish — a long swim in the bathtub-warm ocean, a walk along the endless white beach, stand-up paddleboarding through the shallows, or simply reading beneath the palm trees as the ocean breeze rustles the fronds. Beach vendors pass with fresh coconuts, sliced open with a machete for you to drink the cool water straight from the shell.

4:30 PM — As the day's heat begins to soften, you board a traditional wooden dhow for a sunset cruise along the coast. The triangular lateen sail catches the evening breeze as you drift across the calm Indian Ocean waters, watching the sun sink slowly toward the horizon. The sky cycles through gold, tangerine, deep amber, and finally violet as the crew serves fresh fruit, snacks, and drinks. The silhouettes of distant fishing dhows dot the horizon, and as darkness falls, the first stars appear above the dark ocean while the lights of the shoreline twinkle in the distance. You return to shore for your final dinner on the island — grilled seafood, Zanzibari spices, and the warm evening air carrying the scent of frangipani. A fitting farewell to paradise.
