5-Day Kilimanjaro Climb | Marangu Route Fast Trek
The Classic 'Coca-Cola Route' to Uhuru Peak
Five days to the Roof of Africa via the legendary Marangu Route — the only path on Kilimanjaro with sleeping huts, earning its nickname 'the Coca-Cola Route.' Ascend through lush montane rainforest alive with Colobus monkeys, cross mystical moorland draped in giant heathers, and traverse the stark alpine desert beneath retreating glaciers. The midnight summit push to Uhuru Peak (5,895m) culminates with sunrise over the African continent — a moment that stays with you forever. The most accessible and affordable path to Kilimanjaro's summit.
Tour Highlights
Day-by-Day Itinerary
Marangu Gate (1,860m) to Mandara Hut (2,720m)
After registration at Marangu Gate, begin your ascent through dripping montane rainforest. The trail is well-maintained with wooden bridges and steps. Watch for blue monkeys, Colobus monkeys, and over 170 bird species in the canopy above. Arrive at Mandara Hut nestled in a clearing surrounded by giant heather. Optional walk to Maundi Crater for your first panoramic views.
Mandara Hut (2,720m) to Horombo Hut (3,720m)
Leave the forest canopy behind and enter the moorland zone — a surreal landscape of giant groundsel and lobelia plants found nowhere else on Earth. The trail opens to spectacular views of both Kibo and Mawenzi peaks. On clear days, you can see all the way to the Kenyan plains below. The 1,000m altitude gain today is the biggest of the trek.
Horombo Hut (3,720m) to Kibo Hut (4,703m)
Cross the lunar-like alpine desert — a stark, barren landscape with minimal vegetation. The saddle between Kibo and Mawenzi peaks stretches before you like another planet. Arrive at Kibo Hut, your final camp before the summit. Try to rest and hydrate well — tonight is summit night. Your guide will brief you on the midnight departure.
Summit Night — Kibo Hut to Uhuru Peak (5,895m) to Horombo Hut
Wake at midnight and begin the steep zigzag ascent to Gilman's Point (5,681m) on the crater rim. Push on through the scree to Stella Point and finally Uhuru Peak — the highest point in Africa at 5,895m. Watch the sunrise paint the glaciers gold. Descend to Kibo Hut for a rest, then continue down to Horombo Hut. Total hiking: 12-14 hours.
Horombo Hut to Marangu Gate — Descent & Certificate
Final descent through the moorland and back into the rainforest. The familiar trail feels different descending — notice details you missed on the way up. Arrive at Marangu Gate to collect your summit certificate: a green certificate for Uhuru Peak, or a brown one for Gilman's Point. Transfer to your hotel in Moshi or Arusha for a well-earned celebration.
