Safari Highlights
Day-by-Day Itinerary
Nairobi to Masai Mara National Reserve
6:00 AM. Depart Nairobi heading west through the fertile farmlands of the Great Rift Valley. Pause at the escarpment viewpoint where the valley drops away dramatically — a vast geological wonder stretching to the horizon. Descend through Narok town and continue across the wheat fields of the Loita Plains before entering Maasai country, where herdsmen wrapped in colourful shukas watch over their cattle. By late morning, the landscape opens into the Mara's endless golden grasslands dotted with flat-topped acacia trees — the quintessential African savannah. Enjoy an afternoon game drive in the reserve, immediately encountering large herds of wildebeest, zebra, and Thomson's gazelle. The Mara is home to one of the densest lion populations in Africa, and your guide tracks big cats through the grasslands. Watch for cheetah scanning from termite mounds and leopard draped across sausage tree branches as the sun sets over the reserve.
Full Day in Masai Mara
A full day exploring the Mara — arguably the finest wildlife destination on Earth. Rise at 6:00 AM for an early game drive when predators are most active, the air still cool and the light soft gold. Your guide navigates expertly, following fresh tracks and reading the landscape. Drive to the Mara River, watching for massive Nile crocodiles and pods of hippos that dominate the waterways. The Mara Triangle offers exceptional game viewing with rolling hills and fewer vehicles. Spot elephants moving through the riverine forest, topi standing sentinel on ridgelines, and hyena den sites where playful cubs tumble outside their burrows. Return for lunch and rest during the midday heat. The afternoon drive takes you to different sectors of the reserve — each offering unique encounters. As dusk approaches, the savannah comes alive with the calls of nightjars and the silhouettes of giraffe against a burning orange sky.
Masai Mara to Amboseli National Park
After a final early morning game drive in the Mara, depart for Amboseli National Park. The drive takes you back through the Rift Valley and south towards the Tanzania border — roughly six to seven hours via Nairobi. Mount Kilimanjaro grows larger on the horizon with every mile as you approach Amboseli. Arrive by late afternoon and settle into your lodge — even from the grounds, the views are extraordinary. Africa's highest peak towers above the plains, its snowy summit catching the last light of the day. An evening game drive introduces you to Amboseli's legendary elephant herds — some of the largest-tusked in Africa. Watch family groups gathered at the swamps fed by Kilimanjaro's underground springs, their silhouettes framed against the mountain's purple evening profile. The sense of scale here is humbling — enormous elephants dwarfed by an even more enormous mountain.
Full Day in Amboseli National Park
Wake before dawn for the best Kilimanjaro views — the mountain reveals itself fully in the early morning before clouds gather by mid-morning. A 6:30 AM game drive takes you through Amboseli's diverse habitats: dried lake beds where dust devils dance, papyrus swamps fed by underground springs, and acacia woodland alive with birdsong. This is a photographer's paradise — elephants with tusks sweeping the ground walk against the backdrop of Kilimanjaro's glaciers. Climb Observation Hill for a panoramic view of the entire park — swamps, the lake bed, and on clear days, both Kilimanjaro and Mount Meru in the distance. Spot lions hunting across the open plains and watch for the shy bat-eared fox at its burrow. After lunch, an afternoon drive through the southern marshes reveals buffalo herds, crowned cranes, and the warm amber light that makes Amboseli glow in the late afternoon.
Amboseli to Diani Beach
Enjoy a sunrise game drive for final wildlife encounters — the morning light in Amboseli creates magical photography conditions with Kilimanjaro's peak glowing pink above the horizon. After breakfast, depart Amboseli heading towards the coast. The journey takes you through the Tsavo corridor, where the landscape transitions from open savannah to semi-arid bushland dotted with baobab trees, then gradually into the lush tropical lowlands near the coast. Travel via Voi along the Mombasa Highway, cross the Likoni Ferry channel with views of Mombasa's historic harbour, and continue south to Diani Beach. Arrive by mid-afternoon, where your bush-to-beach adventure reaches its conclusion. White coral sand, warm turquoise Indian Ocean waters, and swaying palm trees greet you — the perfect ending to an extraordinary five-day East African journey from the Mara's big cats to Kilimanjaro's elephants to the Indian Ocean shore.
