5-Day Coast to Nairobi Safari | Tsavo, Amboseli & Lake Nakuru
Red Elephants, Kilimanjaro Giants & Flamingo Shores
Five days from the Indian Ocean to Nairobi through three of Kenya's most spectacular parks. Begin in Tsavo East's vast red-earth wilderness where dust-coated elephant herds roam and crocodiles patrol the Galana River. Ascend to Amboseli for Africa's most iconic photograph — enormous elephants crossing dried lake beds beneath Mount Kilimanjaro's snow-capped dome. Then descend into the Great Rift Valley to Lake Nakuru, where shores shimmer pink with flamingos, black and white rhinos graze the acacia woodland, and leopards drape across fever trees. From coral sand to crimson plains to pink-fringed alkaline lakes — this overland odyssey showcases Kenya's extraordinary diversity.

Day-by-Day Itinerary
Diani Beach to Tsavo East National Park
6:00 AM — Your driver-guide collects you from your Diani Beach hotel. The private 4×4 Land Cruiser heads north-west through the coastal hinterland — coconut palms give way to sisal plantations and scattered baobab trees as the air grows warmer and drier. The Indian Ocean becomes a memory as the landscape turns to rust-red earth and golden scrub.
Enter Tsavo East National Park through Bachuma Gate by mid-morning. Game viewing starts immediately — Tsavo's legendary red elephants materialise from the scrub, their skin stained crimson by iron-rich laterite soil as they dust-bathe. Your guide follows the Galana River downstream — massive crocodiles bask on sun-baked sandbanks while hippos surface in the deeper pools.
Stop at Lugard Falls to marvel at the water-sculpted rock channels carved over millennia, then continue to Aruba Dam where buffalo, waterbuck, and zebra jostle at the waterline beneath circling fish eagles. The afternoon game drive tracks lion prides through the golden grass — Tsavo East's vast open horizons deliver a sense of raw, untamed Africa. Check into your safari lodge as the red earth glows in the setting sun.
Tsavo East to Amboseli National Park
5:30 AM — A dawn game drive through Tsavo East as the plains glow pink and gold. The bush is alive with morning activity — spotted hyenas heading to their dens, secretary birds stalking the grass, and red elephants already moving toward waterholes. Visit Mudanda Rock for panoramic views across the vast wilderness.
After breakfast, depart south-west toward Amboseli National Park. The journey takes you through the scenic corridor via Mtito Andei and the Kimana area. The landscape transforms as vast red plains give way to open grasslands, and a magnificent snow-capped silhouette materialises on the southern horizon — Mount Kilimanjaro, Africa's highest peak at 5,895 metres, growing more commanding with every kilometre.
Arrive at Amboseli by early afternoon and check into your safari lodge. After lunch, head out for your afternoon game drive. Amboseli's open terrain delivers Africa's most dramatic wildlife encounters — enormous elephant herds parade across dried lake beds with Kilimanjaro filling the sky behind them. Navigate the papyrus-fringed swamps where hippos surface lazily and crowned cranes pick through the shallows. As the golden afternoon light deepens, watch for lion prides settling beneath yellow-barked acacia trees. Elephants silhouetted against Kilimanjaro's evening profile — the sky ablaze with amber and violet — is one of Africa's most iconic scenes.
Amboseli to Lake Nakuru National Park
5:30 AM — Rise before dawn for the clearest Kilimanjaro views. The mountain reveals its full glacial crown, glowing rose-pink then gold as the first sun strikes the ice cap. A morning game drive through Amboseli's finest circuits — elephant matriarchs lead their families between the swamps, and with luck a cheetah appears in the golden morning light. Climb Observation Hill for a sweeping 360-degree panorama.
After breakfast, depart north for Lake Nakuru. The highway climbs through the Athi Plains where Maasai herdsmen in crimson shukas guide their cattle through the grasslands. Pass through Nairobi's outskirts without stopping and continue north, descending into the Great Rift Valley — one of the planet's most dramatic geological features. The escarpment viewpoint offers breathtaking panoramas across the valley floor below.
Arrive at Lake Nakuru National Park by late afternoon and check into your lodge. If time permits, enjoy a short evening game drive through the acacia woodland surrounding the lake, watching for waterbuck and impala as the sun sets over the Rift Valley.
Full Day in Lake Nakuru National Park
Wake to the calls of tropical birds in the fever tree forest surrounding your lodge. After breakfast, head out for a full-day exploration of Lake Nakuru National Park — a compact jewel in the Rift Valley floor.
The lake itself is a soda lake whose alkaline waters attract vast congregations of flamingos — at peak times, the shoreline shimmers pink as thousands of lesser flamingos feed on spirulina algae, creating one of the natural world's most extraordinary spectacles. Greater flamingos wade deeper, fishing with their curved bills, while pelicans bob and dive in formation.
Lake Nakuru is one of Kenya's premier rhino sanctuaries — both black and white rhinos roam the park in healthy numbers. Your guide tracks them through the yellow-barked acacia woodland, a habitat that also conceals one of Nakuru's most celebrated residents: leopards. These elusive big cats drape across the horizontal branches of fever trees, their spotted coats blending perfectly with the dappled light.
Drive to Baboon Cliff viewpoint for a sweeping panorama of the lake, the flamingos a pink ribbon below, the Rift Valley escarpment rising behind. Lions, buffalo, Rothschild's giraffes — one of Africa's most endangered subspecies — and waterbuck are all present, making this compact park extraordinarily rewarding. An afternoon game drive along the lake's southern shore completes the day.
Lake Nakuru to Nairobi
7:00 AM — An early morning game drive through Lake Nakuru for a final chance to spot rhinos, leopards, and the park's famous flamingos in the golden dawn light. The fever tree forest is particularly magical at this hour, with colobus monkeys swinging through the canopy and hornbills calling from the treetops.
After breakfast, depart for Nairobi. The road climbs out of the Rift Valley via the escarpment — pause at the viewpoint for one last sweeping vista across the valley floor where Lake Nakuru shimmers below. Continue through the fertile highlands, past coffee plantations and flower farms that supply markets worldwide.
Arrive in Nairobi by midday. Your driver drops you at your hotel, JKIA airport, or any location of your choice. Five days from the turquoise Indian Ocean to the pink shores of an alkaline lake — through red elephant country, beneath Kilimanjaro's glaciers, and into the flamingo-fringed Rift Valley. A safari odyssey across the breadth of Kenya.
