4-Day Tanzania Fly & Drive Safari | Serengeti & Ngorongoro

Serengeti & Ngorongoro

Fly directly into the Serengeti's vast golden plains and maximise every moment in the bush. This premium fly-drive safari opens with aerial views of the endless savannah before landing at a remote airstrip — then it's straight into game drives among lion prides, leopards in riverside fig trees, and — seasonally — the Great Migration's millions of wildebeest streaming across the plains. Transition to the Ngorongoro Crater, descending into a wildlife-packed volcanic caldera where Big Five encounters happen within hours. Black rhinos, flamingo-fringed lakes, and hyena clans — two of Africa's greatest wildlife arenas, zero wasted travel time.

Day-by-Day Itinerary

Day 1

Fly to Serengeti

Early morning. Transfer from your Arusha hotel to the local airstrip for your flight into the heart of the Serengeti. The short flight is spectacular — watch the patchwork of Maasai farmland and the Ngorongoro highlands pass beneath you, then the endless Serengeti plains appear, stretching to every horizon in shades of gold and green. Landing on a remote bush airstrip, the silence of the savannah greets you as your safari guide is waiting beside a 4x4 vehicle. Within minutes of landing, you're on a game drive. The Serengeti delivers immediately: herds of wildebeest and zebra grazing on the open plains, giraffes moving between scattered acacia trees, and your guide tracking fresh lion prints in the dust. Spend the afternoon exploring the Seronera Valley — the park's predator heartland — where lions sprawl on riverside rocks and leopards hide in the thick branches of sausage trees. Check into your tented camp as the sun sets and the sounds of the African night begin.

Day 2

Serengeti Plains

6:00 AM. A full day in the Serengeti with no travel commitments — just uninterrupted wildlife viewing. The dawn drive heads to the open plains where cheetahs perch on termite mounds, scanning for prey in the cool morning air. Your guide navigates toward the kopjes — ancient granite outcrops that rise from the flat savannah like rocky islands. Lions use these as lookout posts, and the rocks themselves are alive with colourful agama lizards and small rock hyraxes. The Serengeti is the big cat capital of the world, and today is your chance for close encounters — perhaps a leopard returning to a kill cached in a tree, or a cheetah mother teaching her cubs to hunt. Enjoy a bush lunch in the shade, then spend the afternoon in a different sector of the park. During the Great Migration season, the moving herds of wildebeest are an overwhelming sight — millions of animals in a single, restless column stretching to the horizon. Return to camp under a sky thick with stars.

Day 3

Serengeti to Ngorongoro

~145km | Approx. 3 hrs

Enjoy one final early morning game drive in the Serengeti as the golden dawn light floods the plains. By 9:00 AM, begin the drive east toward the Ngorongoro Conservation Area — about three hours through the Serengeti's eastern plains, past the Naabi Hill Gate, and across the grassy highlands. The landscape changes noticeably as you climb: open savannah gives way to scattered bush, then to cool highland forest. Arrive at the Ngorongoro crater rim by lunchtime. The panoramic view from the rim is staggering — a vast caldera, 20 kilometres across and 600 metres deep, its floor a mosaic of grassland, marsh, forest, and a shimmering soda lake. After lunch, wind down the descent road into the crater. The wildlife density is extraordinary: lions lounge near the marsh, enormous bull elephants cross the open plain, and herds of zebra and wildebeest graze alongside buffalo. Search for the crater's resident black rhinos, and watch flamingos paint Lake Magadi pink. Ascend at dusk and check into your lodge on the misty rim.

Day 4

Crater to Arusha

~190km | Approx. 3.5 hrs

6:00 AM. Descend into the Ngorongoro Crater for a dawn game drive — the perfect finale. The morning mist drifts across the caldera floor, the steep walls rising sharply on all sides. Lions are on the move in the early hours, spotted hyenas trot back to their dens, and crowned cranes step through the marshes. Visit the hippo pool, where dozens of hippos jostle and bellow in the murky water, and scan the open scrubland for one last black rhino sighting. The morning light in the crater is magical — soft and golden, perfect for photography. By mid-morning, take a final sweeping look at this natural amphitheatre — one of the planet's most remarkable wildlife concentrations — then ascend the rim. The three-hour drive back to Arusha passes through highland forest, coffee plantations, and bustling roadside towns. Arrive in Arusha by early afternoon for your departure or onward journey.
