Day-by-Day Itinerary

Day 1

Diani Beach to Tsavo East National Park

~180km | Approx. 3 hrs

6:00 AM — Your C.A.T.S driver-guide collects you from your Diani Beach hotel. Load your bags into the 4×4 Land Cruiser and leave the turquoise Indian Ocean behind, heading north through the coastal hinterland. Coconut palms and mango orchards give way to sisal plantations and scattered baobab trees as the landscape dries and reddens.

By 9:00 AM you enter Tsavo East National Park through Bachuma Gate — Kenya's largest protected wilderness, an expanse of red-earth savannah bigger than Wales. The game drives begin immediately. Tsavo's legendary red elephants appear — enormous herds dust-bathing in iron-rich laterite soil until their hides glow the colour of the earth. Watch a matriarch lead her family to water, calves tumbling between their mothers' legs.

Your guide follows the Galana River downstream — its rust-coloured waters cutting through the crimson plains, lined with doum palms where lesser kudu hide in the shadows. Stop at Aruba Dam, one of Tsavo's premier wildlife magnets where buffalo, waterbuck, and zebra jostle at the waterline while Nile crocodiles drift like logs and fish eagles scan from dead trees.

Continue to Lugard Falls — not a waterfall but a series of bizarre, water-sculpted rock formations where the river forces through narrow channels carved over millennia. Massive crocodiles sun themselves on the sandbanks while hippos snort in the deeper pools. The afternoon game drive tracks lion prides through the golden grass, watches for cheetah on termite mounds, and spots gerenuk browsing on hind legs. As the sun drops, the red earth turns molten gold.

Day 2

Tsavo East to Tsavo West National Park

~90km | Approx. 1.5 hrs

6:00 AM — Rise for a dawn game drive through Tsavo East as the sun paints the red plains in soft gold. The bush is alive with morning activity — spotted hyenas heading to their dens, secretary birds stalking through the grass, and the red elephants already moving toward the waterholes. Visit Mudanda Rock, a massive whale-backed inselberg rising from the plains, for sweeping panoramic views across miles of wilderness.

After breakfast at your lodge, cross from Tsavo East into Tsavo West. The landscape transforms dramatically — flat red savannah gives way to rolling volcanic hills draped in dense bush, with the blue silhouette of the Chyulu Hills on the northern horizon.

Your first stop in Tsavo West is Mzima Springs — one of Kenya's natural wonders. Crystal-clear water bubbles up from underground volcanic rivers at 250 million litres per day, creating transparent pools. Step into the underwater viewing chamber and watch hippos gliding gracefully beneath the surface, barbel fish darting between their legs, while vervet monkeys play in the fig trees overhead.

Continue to the Shetani Lava Flow — a haunting expanse of jet-black volcanic rock from eruptions just 200 years ago, standing in eerie contrast to the green bush surrounding it. The Maasai named it "Shetani" — devil — believing the lava was released from the underworld.

The afternoon game drive takes you through the Ngulia Hills area, where the rhino sanctuary shelters Kenya's recovering black rhino population. Watch for leopard draped across rocky outcrops, lesser kudu in the thick riverine bush, and Verreaux's eagles soaring on thermals above the escarpment. The evening settles over Tsavo West's volcanic silhouette as you return to your lodge.

Day 3

Tsavo West to Amboseli National Park

~180km | Approx. 3 hrs

6:30 AM — A final early morning game drive through Tsavo West's rugged terrain. The morning light catches the rocky landscape in sharp relief — klipspringer balance on boulder faces, rock hyrax sunbathe at crevice entrances, and hornbills swoop between the acacia canopy.

After breakfast, depart north toward Amboseli National Park. The route takes you through the scenic corridor between the Chyulu Hills and the main highway, the landscape opening gradually from dense volcanic bush into wide-open grasslands. By late morning, a magnificent snow-capped silhouette materialises on the southern horizon — Mount Kilimanjaro, Africa's highest peak, rising 5,895 metres into the equatorial sky. The sight grows more commanding with every kilometre.

Arrive at Amboseli by early afternoon and check into your safari lodge. After lunch with Kilimanjaro views, head out for your afternoon game drive. Amboseli's open terrain delivers some of Africa's most dramatic wildlife encounters — enormous elephant herds parade across dried lake beds with Kilimanjaro filling the sky behind them. Navigate the papyrus-fringed swamps fed by the mountain's underground springs, where hippos surface lazily and crowned cranes pick through the shallows. As the golden afternoon light deepens, watch for lion prides settling beneath yellow-barked acacia trees. The sight of elephants silhouetted against Kilimanjaro's evening profile, the sky ablaze with amber and violet, is one of Africa's most iconic scenes.

Day 4

Amboseli National Park to Nairobi

~230km | Approx. 4-4.5 hrs

5:30 AM — Your final safari morning. Rise before dawn for the clearest Kilimanjaro views — the mountain reveals its full glacial crown, glowing rose-pink then gold as the first sun strikes the ice cap. This is the moment that defines Amboseli: enormous elephants moving across the pale lake bed as Africa's highest peak towers behind them in the crystalline dawn light.

Your morning game drive rolls through the park's finest circuits one last time. Elephant matriarchs lead their families between the swamps, buffalo herds graze the open plains, and with luck a cheetah or lion appears in the golden morning light. Climb Observation Hill for a final sweeping 360-degree panorama — elephants, swamps, and Kilimanjaro's snow-capped summit all in one breathtaking view.

8:30 AM — Return to your lodge for breakfast, savouring the last Kilimanjaro views. Pack up and depart north for Nairobi. The highway climbs through the Athi Plains — Maasai herdsmen in crimson shukas guide their cattle through the grasslands, and the rolling landscape offers occasional sightings of zebra and giraffe beyond the fencelines.

Arrive in Nairobi by early afternoon. Your driver drops you at your hotel, the airport, or any location of your choice. Four days that transformed a beach holiday into an epic wildlife odyssey — from the red elephants of Tsavo to Kilimanjaro's glaciers, from volcanic lava flows to hippo-filled springs, arriving in Kenya's capital with memories to treasure forever.
