Day-by-Day Itinerary
Nairobi to Amboseli National Park
6:00 AM — Your C.A.T.S driver-guide picks you up from your Nairobi hotel and heads south on the Namanga Road, bottled water chilled and ready in the vehicle. The city melts away as you cross the Athi River plains, where Maasai herdsmen in crimson shukas walk their cattle through the early-morning mist. Stop for breakfast at a roadside café where fresh chapati, eggs, and Kenyan tea fuel the drive ahead.
As you push deeper into Kajiado County, the landscape widens into golden grassland and Mount Kilimanjaro begins its slow, magnificent reveal on the southern horizon — Africa's highest peak floating above the clouds. Arrive at Amboseli National Park by late morning, check into your safari lodge for lunch, and by 2:00 PM you're out on your first game drive.
Amboseli's open plains offer unobstructed views of Kilimanjaro rising dramatically behind herds of elephants — some with tusks nearly touching the ground. Your guide navigates towards the Enkongo Narok swamp where hippos wallow and birdlife is prolific: African fish eagles perch in dead acacia snags, sacred ibis probe the mud, and elegant crowned cranes dance through the shallows. As golden afternoon light settles over the savannah, the entire landscape glows amber beneath Kilimanjaro's silhouette.
Amboseli to Tsavo West National Park
5:45 AM — Rise before dawn for a final morning game drive in Amboseli, capturing the mountain in its full snow-capped glory before clouds gather. Elephants move through the swamps in soft pink-gold light, and you may spot a lion pride settling after a night's hunt — their bellies full, their eyes heavy.
After breakfast at your lodge, depart for Tsavo West National Park — roughly three hours via the Kimana corridor. The terrain shifts dramatically: Amboseli's flat, open plains give way to Tsavo West's rugged volcanic landscape of hilly ridges, lava flows, and dense green bush.
Arrive by early afternoon and head straight to Mzima Springs — a remarkable oasis of crystal-clear pools fed by underground rivers flowing from the Chyulu Hills. Peer through the underwater viewing chamber and watch hippos gliding weightlessly through the transparent water alongside barbel fish and Nile crocodiles. The clarity is astonishing — you can see every detail of their movements beneath the surface.
Continue with an afternoon game drive past the dramatic Shetani Lava Flow — a jet-black volcanic expanse where eruptions just two centuries ago left the earth scorched and barren against the lush green bush beyond. Watch for lesser kudu slipping through the dense thornbush and gerenuk standing on hind legs to browse high acacia branches. The Chyulu Hills glow purple on the horizon as the sun dips below the ridgeline.
Tsavo West to Tsavo East National Park
6:00 AM — An early morning game drive through Tsavo West's hilly terrain, where leopards are more commonly sighted than in most Kenyan parks. Stop at Roaring Rocks viewpoint for a sweeping panorama across miles of untamed bush. If you missed Mzima Springs yesterday, this morning offers a second chance to watch hippos glide through those crystal-clear pools.
After breakfast, drive east to Tsavo East National Park via the Mtito Andei gate — about ninety minutes through changing scenery. Where Tsavo West is volcanic and hilly, Tsavo East opens into vast, flat semi-arid plains that feel truly wild and untamed. Kenya's largest national park, the iron-rich red soil gives everything a distinctive rust colour — including the famous red elephants who dust-bathe in the crimson laterite until they're coated head to toe.
Your afternoon game drive follows the Galana River, where enormous Nile crocodiles bask on sandy banks and hippo pods hold their ground midstream. Visit Lugard Falls — actually a series of dramatic rapids cutting through wildly sculpted, rainbow-coloured rock — and scan the surrounding plains for lion prides, buffalo herds numbering in the hundreds, and giraffes browsing scattered commiphora bush. Stop at the enormous Mudanda Rock, a natural water catchment that draws hundreds of elephants during the dry season — a truly humbling spectacle.
Tsavo East to Diani Beach
6:00 AM — A final early morning game drive through Tsavo East's red-earth wilderness. The low golden light catches dust kicked up by elephant herds heading to the Galana River for their morning drink. Watch for Aruba Dam, where wildlife congregates at the water's edge — zebra, waterbuck, and buffalo jostling for position alongside the park's iconic red-dusted giants.
After breakfast at your lodge, it's time for the bush-to-beach finale.
**Your Coastal Transfer — Two Great Options:**
**Option A: First Class SGR Madaraka Express** — Your guide drives you to nearby Voi Station (~30 minutes from your lodge). Board the Madaraka Express at 12:08 PM and settle into air-conditioned first-class comfort with large picture windows as Kenya's modern high-speed train glides through Tsavo's vast wilderness. Spot elephants, giraffes, and perhaps even big cats from your reclining seat as the savannah rolls past. Arrive at Mombasa Terminus by 2:00 PM, where your C.A.T.S representative meets you for the scenic 1.5-hour transfer south to your Diani Beach hotel. Toes in the sand by 4:00 PM.
**Option B: Continue in Your 4×4** — Prefer the open road? Your guide drives you directly to the coast via Voi and the Mombasa Highway — roughly four hours through landscape that transitions from dry red savannah to lush tropical greenery. Baobabs give way to coconut palms and mango trees. Cross the Likoni Ferry with views of Mombasa's old harbour, then continue south to Diani Beach. White coral sand, warm turquoise waters, and swaying palms — four days of safari rewarded with Indian Ocean paradise.
