Day-by-Day Itinerary

Day 1

Diani Beach to Tsavo East National Park

~180km | Approx. 3 hrs

5:30 AM — Your C.A.T.S guide collects your group from Diani Beach hotels. The coastal palms thin out as you head inland, replaced by baobab silhouettes and rust-red earth. Stop for breakfast en route at a roadside cafe.

8:30 AM — Enter Tsavo East through Bachuma Gate. Morning game drive along the Galana River — **red-dusted elephants** appear in family herds, their skin tinted rust-orange. Hippos surface in the dark pools while 4-metre Nile crocodiles bask on sandbanks.

Stop at **Mudanda Rock** for panoramic views across the park. The waterhole below attracts hundreds of elephants during dry months — a photographer's dream.

12:30 PM — Lunch at your lodge overlooking the Tsavo plains. Afternoon game drive targets Aruba Dam and the lion territories. Tsavo's big cats are elusive but your guide reads the bush expertly — fresh prints in red dust, alarm calls from impala herds, vultures circling a distant kill.

6:00 PM — Sundowner at camp as the Tsavo sun drops below the horizon in a blaze of crimson.

Day 2

Tsavo West to Amboseli National Park

~250km | Approx. 5 hrs (including game drives + transfer)

6:00 AM — Dawn game drive in Tsavo East, then cross into Tsavo West. Visit **Mzima Springs** — crystal-clear volcanic pools where hippos glide underwater, visible through an observation chamber. Walk the **Shetani Lava Flow**, a frozen river of black volcanic rock.

10:30 AM — Depart Tsavo West heading southwest through the dramatic Chyulu Hills corridor. The landscape rises from dry bushland to rolling green hills, and then — if the clouds cooperate — the massive snow-capped dome of **Mount Kilimanjaro** appears on the southern horizon. Africa's highest peak, 5,895 metres of ice and rock, floating above the plains.

1:00 PM — Enter Amboseli National Park. Lunch at your lodge with Kilimanjaro views. Afternoon game drive through Amboseli's famous swamps, where **big-tusked elephants** wade through papyrus marshes with Kilimanjaro as the backdrop — the most iconic image in African safari photography.

The swamps attract huge concentrations of wildlife: buffalo herds, hippo, jackal, hyena, and hundreds of bird species including flamingos, pelicans, and the crowned crane. Lion prides patrol the grasslands around the swamp edges.

6:00 PM — Return to your lodge as Kilimanjaro turns pink in the alpenglow.

Day 3

Amboseli National Park to Diani Beach

~450km | Approx. 7 hrs (including game drive + transfer)

6:00 AM — Final dawn game drive in Amboseli. The early light on Kilimanjaro is the best — the mountain glows gold, then white, then disappears into cloud. Elephants are silhouetted against the mountain as they cross the dry lake bed. This is the image that sells Kenya.

Scan for lion, cheetah, and hyena on the open plains. The observation hill offers a 360-degree view across the park and the Kilimanjaro massif.

8:30 AM — Breakfast at the lodge. Say goodbye to Kilimanjaro and begin the drive southeast toward the coast. The route passes through Maasai rangeland, Chyulu Hills, and the Mombasa highway corridor.

Stop for lunch en route. The landscape gradually transitions from dry savannah back to tropical greenery — coconut palms, mango orchards, and the warm humid air of the coast.

5:00 PM — Arrive at your Diani Beach hotel. Three parks, three days, and Africa's highest mountain — all behind you. The Indian Ocean ahead.

🍽️ Meals:Breakfast, Lunch
