Day-by-Day Itinerary

Day 1

Diani Beach to Amboseli National Park

~400km | Approx. 6-7 hrs

5:30 AM — Your C.A.T.S driver-guide collects you from your Diani Beach hotel while the Indian Ocean still murmurs in the pre-dawn darkness. Load your bags into the 4×4 Land Cruiser and head north through the sleeping coastal strip — coconut palms silhouetted against a sky just beginning to lighten.

The route takes you inland through Kwale County and into the vast coastal hinterland. Stop for a hearty breakfast en route at a local café as the landscape transitions from tropical greenery to drier bushland. The road climbs gradually, passing through Tsavo's eastern fringes — scattered baobabs, red-earth termite mounds, and the occasional giraffe browsing roadside acacia.

Continue northwest toward Amboseli. By late morning, the terrain opens into wide grasslands and a magnificent silhouette begins to materialise on the southern horizon — Mount Kilimanjaro, Africa's highest peak, rising 5,895 metres into a blue equatorial sky. The snow-capped dome grows more commanding with every kilometre, its glaciers glinting in the midday sun.

Arrive at Amboseli National Park by early afternoon. Check into your safari lodge and enjoy lunch with Kilimanjaro views before heading out for your first afternoon game drive. Amboseli's open terrain delivers some of Africa's most dramatic wildlife viewing — enormous elephant herds parade across dried lake beds with Kilimanjaro filling the sky behind them, their great tusks almost touching the dusty ground. Navigate the papyrus-fringed swamps fed by the mountain's underground springs, where hippos surface lazily and crowned cranes pick through the shallows. As the golden afternoon light deepens, watch for lion prides settling beneath yellow-barked acacia trees and listen for the eerie call of the fish eagle echoing across the wetlands.

Day 2

Full Day in Amboseli National Park

5:30 AM — Rise before dawn for the clearest Kilimanjaro views — the mountain reveals its full glacial crown in the early morning before clouds gather by mid-morning. Step outside and watch the peak glow rose-pink, then gold, as the first rays of equatorial sun strike the ice cap.

6:30 AM — Your morning game drive rolls through Amboseli's diverse landscapes: dried lake beds shimmering with heat haze where dust devils spiral skyward, green swamps alive with birdsong, and acacia woodland where weaverbirds construct their intricate hanging nests. This is elephant country like nowhere else — family groups of twenty or more move in slow procession, matriarchs with tusks sweeping the ground leading calves barely knee-high. The Kilimanjaro backdrop transforms every sighting into a postcard.

Climb Observation Hill for a sweeping 360-degree panorama — the entire park unfolds below you. Elephant herds trace dark lines across the pale lake bed, swamplands shimmer green to the west, and Kilimanjaro towers above it all, close enough to count its glaciers.

Return for lunch at your lodge. The afternoon drive explores the southern marshes where buffalo herds congregate in their hundreds, spotted hyenas lope across the plains, and the rare bat-eared fox peers from its burrow entrance. Over 400 bird species have been recorded here — look for martial eagles circling overhead and superb starlings flashing iridescent blue from the thornbush. As sunset paints the sky amber and violet, elephants silhouetted against Kilimanjaro's purple evening profile create one of Africa's most unforgettable scenes.

Day 3

Amboseli National Park to Diani Beach

~400km | Approx. 6-7 hrs

6:00 AM — Your final morning in Amboseli. Rise early for one last game drive through the cool dawn air — the bush is electric at first light. Elephants are already on the move between the swamps, their breath visible in the crisp morning. A cheetah stretches and scans the plains, hyenas slink back to their dens, and the pink-gold light on Kilimanjaro's snowcap creates a scene that burns itself into memory.

8:30 AM — Return to your lodge for breakfast, savouring the last Kilimanjaro views. Pack up and depart for the coast. The return journey retraces the dramatic landscape transitions in reverse — wide-open Amboseli grasslands give way to rolling bushland, then the Tsavo plains with their red earth and scattered baobabs.

The drive south crosses through Kenya's southeastern corridor as the terrain gradually descends toward the Indian Ocean. Dry scrubland softens into mango orchards and sisal plantations, and by late afternoon the first coconut palms and warm salt air announce your return to the coast.

Arrive back at your Diani Beach hotel by early evening — trading Kilimanjaro's snow-capped silhouette for the gentle lap of the Indian Ocean on white coral sand. Three days that took you from beach paradise to Africa's most iconic mountain and back — with a safari's worth of elephant encounters, big cat sightings, and breathtaking Kilimanjaro sunrises to treasure.
