2-Day Tsavo East & West Group Safari from Diani | Mzima Springs & Red Elephants
Two Parks, Two Days from the Coast
Cross both halves of Kenya's largest wilderness in a two-day group adventure from Diani Beach. Day one plunges into Tsavo East's vast red-earth plains — tracking elephants along the Galana River and scanning Mudanda Rock's waterhole. Day two crosses into Tsavo West for the crystal-clear underwater world of Mzima Springs, the jet-black Shetani Lava Flow, and lion country beneath the Chyulu Hills. Two parks, two worlds — one unforgettable trip.
Tour Highlights
Day-by-Day Itinerary
Diani Beach to Tsavo East National Park
5:30 AM — Your C.A.T.S guide collects your group from Diani Beach hotels. Head north along the Mombasa highway as the sun rises over the Indian Ocean behind you. Stop for breakfast at a roadside cafe en route.
8:30 AM — Enter Tsavo East through Bachuma Gate. The park opens up in a vast panorama of rust-red earth and scrubland stretching to every horizon. This is Kenya's largest park — raw, wild, and untamed.
Morning game drives follow the Galana River circuit. **Red-dusted elephants** appear in herds of 20–50, their skin stained rust-orange from laterite dust baths. Nile crocodiles bask on the riverbanks, perfectly still until a careless impala ventures too close. Hippos grunt and surface in deeper pools.
Drive to **Mudanda Rock** — a 1.5-km natural rock dam where wildlife congregates at the waterhole below. Elephants, buffalo, zebra, and giraffe all drink here while birds of prey circle overhead.
12:30 PM — Lunch at Voi Safari Lodge or a park picnic site with views over Tsavo's endless red plains.
Afternoon game drive targets lion country in the southern circuits. Tsavo's lions are legendary — the descendants of the man-eaters of Tsavo. Today they are more concerned with zebra herds. Watch for gerenuk feeding on hind legs, lesser kudu in the thickets, and martial eagles perched on dead trees.
5:00 PM — Arrive at your overnight accommodation within or just outside the park.
Tsavo West National Park – Mzima Springs & Shetani Lava
6:00 AM — Dawn game drive in Tsavo East before departing westward. Cross the Nairobi-Mombasa highway into Tsavo West — and the landscape transforms. Green volcanic hills replace the flat red plains. The Chyulu Hills create a dramatic backdrop.
9:30 AM — Arrive at **Mzima Springs** — one of Kenya's most extraordinary natural phenomena. 250 million litres of crystal-clear water bubble up daily from volcanic rock, creating pools teeming with hippos and Nile crocodiles. An underwater observation chamber lets you watch hippos glide past in impossibly clear water — a surreal experience.
11:00 AM — Drive to the **Shetani Lava Flow** — a jet-black river of volcanic rock frozen mid-flow across the landscape. Walk across the 200-year-old lava field (Shetani means "devil" in Swahili — locals believed only the devil could produce such destruction). The Shetani Caves nearby are worth exploring.
12:30 PM — Lunch with views of the Chyulu Hills. The afternoon game drive explores Tsavo West's predator-rich western plains. Lions and cheetah hunt the open grasslands, while leopards favour the rocky outcrops. Elephant herds cross between watering points, and giraffe browse the acacia woodland.
3:30 PM — Exit the park and begin the drive back to the coast. Arrive in Diani Beach by 6:30 PM.
