Day-by-Day Itinerary

Nairobi to Amboseli

~240km | Approx. 4 hrs

8:00 AM. Your family safari begins with a relaxed departure from Nairobi, heading south on the Namanga road with plenty of stops along the way. The kids will spot Maasai herders with their cattle and goats near the roadside. As you approach Amboseli National Park, Mount Kilimanjaro appears above the clouds like something from a storybook. Your first game drive delivers the moment every child dreams of — elephants with their babies walking right past the vehicle, the snow-capped peak rising behind them. Settle into your family lodge with a refreshing pool swim before dinner.

7:00 AM — a gentle start for younger travellers — heading out to Amboseli's marshlands where hippos yawn wide enough to see their enormous teeth (the kids will love counting them). Elephants wade through the swamp grass while white egrets hitch rides on their broad backs. Climb Observation Hill together for panoramic Kilimanjaro views that make the whole family gasp. Your guide brings wildlife to life with stories — why zebras have stripes, how elephants "talk" through vibrations in the ground. Afternoon pool time and family games back at the lodge.

Amboseli to Masai Mara

~400km | Approx. 7 hrs

7:00 AM departure with plenty of comfort stops along the way — your guide keeps the kids entertained with animal trivia during the long drive west and north around the Rift Valley. By mid-afternoon you enter the Masai Mara, and excitement builds as wildlife appears everywhere — zebras grazing alongside the track, warthogs trotting with tails held straight up like antennae (always good for a giggle), and then the big moment: your family's first Masai Mara big cat sighting.

Full Day Game Drives

6:30 AM, while the Mara is cool and predators are active — watch a cheetah family teaching cubs to hunt, the youngsters tumbling over each other in the dewy grass. Your guide turns each sighting into a lesson, helping the kids identify tracks and bird calls. A bush lunch under a shady acacia feels like a real explorer's picnic. The afternoon brings elephant families splashing at a river crossing and giraffes bending their impossibly long necks to drink.

Today's game drive is paced for the family — a 7:00 AM start, with the flexibility to linger wherever the kids are most excited. Head to the hippo pools where dozens of hippos wallow, snort, and wiggle their ears — endless entertainment for every age. Giraffe families with wobbly-legged calves, playful baboon troops, and colourful lilac-breasted rollers fill the afternoon. Return to the lodge for evening stargazing, your guide pointing out the Southern Cross.

Day 6 — Masai Mara — Cross Border to Serengeti
6

Masai Mara — Cross Border to Serengeti

~300km via Isebania | Approx. 6-7 hrs

A morning game drive offers one last Mara surprise — perhaps a leopard in a fig tree or a secretary bird stomping through the grass. After breakfast, drive to the Isebania border, where the kids earn a new passport stamp as your Tanzanian guide warmly welcomes the family. The bush thins into the endless golden Serengeti plains, and the children's faces light up as grass and sky stretch on forever. Your afternoon family game drive brings zebra herds and wildebeest columns before you settle into your family lodge for campfire stories.

Full Day Game Drives

At 6:30 AM, the Serengeti belongs to your family. Track lion cubs wrestling on a sun-warmed granite kopje while their mother watches with half-closed eyes. Your guide finds a cheetah perched on a termite mound, scanning for breakfast — the kids hold their breath as it bursts into a sprint. Vast herds of wildebeest and zebra drift across the plains like a living river. Evening stargazing back at the lodge reveals the Milky Way in breathtaking clarity.

Day 8 — Serengeti to Ngorongoro Crater
8

Serengeti to Ngorongoro Crater

~145km | Approx. 3 hrs

A morning game drive gives the family one last Serengeti sunrise before you drive east into the Ngorongoro highlands, misty green forest rolling past the windows. Arrive at the crater rim — the children will race to the viewpoint and stare in amazement at the vast world hidden inside this ancient volcano, 600 metres below. Check into your rim lodge for the evening, with the crater floor waiting to be explored tomorrow.

Day 9 — Ngorongoro to Tarangire
9

Ngorongoro to Tarangire

~145km | Approx. 3 hrs

Descend into the Ngorongoro Crater at dawn — it feels like entering a lost world. Turn the morning into a Big Five scavenger hunt: who spots the black rhino first? Can everyone find the lion pride near the Lerai Forest? Watch flamingos colour Lake Magadi pink while hippos surface nearby. After a picnic lunch on the crater floor, climb back to the rim and drive south to Tarangire, where towering baobab trees and elephant herds greet you at your final safari lodge.

Tarangire to Arusha
