Day-by-Day Itinerary

Diani Beach to Tsavo East National Park
5:00 AM — Early pickup from your Diani Beach hotel. The pre-dawn coast is still and cool as your C.A.T.S driver-guide heads north on the Mombasa-Nairobi highway. Watch the landscape transform from tropical palm groves to dry scrubland and scattered baobabs — the gateway to Tsavo country. Stop en route at a roadside cafe for breakfast.
8:00 AM — Enter Tsavo East National Park through Bachuma Gate. The sheer scale hits immediately — 13,747 sq km of raw, untamed wilderness stretching to every horizon. The earth is iron-red, staining everything it touches — including the elephants.
8:30 AM — Your first game drive circuit along the Galana River. Hippo pods surface and submerge in the dark water while Nile crocodiles bask on sandbanks. Red-dusted elephants — Tsavo's signature — emerge from the bush in family herds, their skin tinted rust-orange from dust-bathing in the laterite soil. Watch for lions resting in the shade of salvadora bushes nearby.
10:30 AM — Drive to Mudanda Rock, a 1.5-km long rock outcrop rising from the plains like a miniature Uluru. From the top, scan the waterhole below — elephants, buffalo, zebra, and antelope gather here, especially during dry months. The views across Tsavo's endless plains are breathtaking.
12:00 PM — Lunch at a designated picnic site within the park, surrounded by the sounds of the bush.
1:00 PM — Afternoon game drive through the southern circuits. Gerenuk — the giraffe-gazelle that feeds standing on its hind legs — are a Tsavo speciality. Lesser kudu, eland, and oryx inhabit the drier sections. Your guide knows the leopard territories and lion prides, tracking fresh prints across the red dust.
3:00 PM — Final waterhole stop at Aruba Dam, a magnet for wildlife in the late afternoon. Elephant herds numbering 50+ sometimes converge here — a spectacle of dust, trumpeting, and playful calves. Buffalo eye you warily from the muddy edges.
4:00 PM — Exit the park and begin the drive back to the coast. Arrive at your Diani Beach hotel by 7:00 PM — sunburnt, dusty, and buzzing with safari stories.
