Destination Guide
About Mahale Mountains National Park
Mahale Mountains National Park is one of the most extraordinary wildlife destinations in Africa — a place where wild chimpanzees live on the forested shores of Lake Tanganyika, the world's longest and second-deepest freshwater lake. Covering 1,613 square kilometres of steep, jungle-clad mountains rising to 2,462 metres, Mahale is home to approximately 800 chimpanzees, including the famous M-group habituated through decades of Japanese primatological research since the 1960s. Trekking through the rainforest to sit with a family of wild chimps — watching them groom, play, climb, and call to one another — is a profoundly moving experience that ranks among Africa's greatest wildlife encounters.
Why Visit Mahale Mountains National Park?
Mahale offers one of only a handful of places on Earth where you can track habituated wild chimpanzees on foot. The combination of primate trekking, pristine mountain rainforest, and the turquoise waters of Lake Tanganyika is found nowhere else. With no roads and no vehicles — only boats and your feet — Mahale delivers an experience that feels genuinely wild and adventurous. The exclusivity means intimate, personal encounters with our closest relatives.
