About Lake Nakuru National Park

Lake Nakuru National Park is a compact wildlife gem in Kenya's Great Rift Valley, famous worldwide for its spectacular flamingo congregations and as one of Africa's most important rhino sanctuaries. The park surrounds the shallow, alkaline Lake Nakuru and covers 188 square kilometres of lake, marsh, grassland, rocky escarpment, and acacia forest. When conditions are right, up to two million flamingos create a shimmering pink carpet across the lake — one of nature's most breathtaking visual spectacles. Beyond the flamingos, Nakuru is a fenced sanctuary protecting over 70 black and white rhinos, making it one of Kenya's most reliable destinations for rhino sightings. The park also supports lions, leopards, giraffes, buffalo, waterbuck, and over 450 bird species. Its compact size and proximity to Nairobi (just 2 hours) make it a perfect addition to any Kenya safari itinerary.

Why Visit Lake Nakuru National Park?

Lake Nakuru offers three compelling reasons to visit: flamingos, rhinos, and variety. The park's compact size means you can cover the best areas in half a day, making it perfect for day trips or as a stopover between Nairobi and the Masai Mara. As a fenced rhino sanctuary, Nakuru offers some of Kenya's best chances of seeing both black and white rhinos. The lake's birdlife is world-class, with 450+ species. The variety of habitats — lake, forest, cliff, and grassland — supports a surprising diversity of wildlife for such a small park.
